Not to be one of those guys... but steel is smelted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel#Steel_production

"When iron is smelted from its ore, it contains more carbon than is desirable. To become steel, it must be reprocessed to reduce the carbon to the correct amount, at which point other elements can be added."

"Sept 26 Renamed metal to steel."

perhaps metal should be renamed to Iron and the smelter can be used to make steel at a 3 iron to 2 steel ratio and have it make the area very dirty as a result of the process.

Just a thought.

Youll be mining ancient ships i believe. So steel is fine in that context.

I'd never met an iterator I liked....until Zhentar saved me.
Why Unity5, WHY do you forsake me?

RawCode

Same logic as plasteel that obviously not natural material but still mined from "walls".

Everything you mine is crashed parts of space ships (including derelict ones).

OH yes you are!

Aand so am I! These kind of things bother me immensely aswell and I can't help it =P
But maybe the metal at rimworlds is less carbonated by default so it's just steel *nods knowingly*

Edit: Or like the fast posters before me says! Rimworld is that lonely tree in the desert where everybody has to crash atleast once
Edit2: and there's "lot" of ruins around and with the upcoming 'shrines' too, recovering ancient scraps of steel seems plausible to me

What WILL bug me greatly is the art. If the "mineral" veins stay as they are im not sure mining steel is gonna feel right but I cant see art that wont look ugly, apart from actual old ships stuck in mountains to the point where you can even get in them....the dwarves would looove that lol!

Oh yeah finding something like this inside a mountain?
I'd be a dwarf rest of my rimworld

Oh so the stuff inside the mountains is not naturally forming?  And plasteel being completely made up is acceptable as... Well its completely made up.

I thought that, since steel is an alliage of iron and coal, that steel would contain more coal than iron. Ironic.
Features everywhere!
