Is it intended that "friendly" visitors just decide to take my food and eat it ? I'm pretty sure they don't pay or work for it, so this is pretty much stealing.

Are you sure they're taking your food? Since A7, anyone that shows up (visitors, attackers, etc.) carries one meal, and eats it when they get hungry. Visitors leave before they get hungry again.
Some sort of psychic wave has swept over the landscape. Your colonists are okay, but...
It seems many of the scythers in the area have been driven insane.

I've absolutely seen visitors come in and eat my food.  One visitor never left, he just kept eating my food, sleeping on the floor when exhausted, and generally being a mooch.  He really wasn't much of a problem but after locking the main base door during a siege he went on a tantrum (due to no food) and broke some things outside.  Ended up having to wall him in and let him starve to death :(

I can't wait to get more meaningful interactions with visitors.  Actually invite them in and give them hospitality, trade, all that fun.

You sure it was a visitor? It sounds like someone that crashed, but you ignored instead of rescuing, and they recovered.

I'm not entirely sure if they ate my food. Since I didn't see them having any food, I assumed they grabbed mine. It is entirely possible that they just ate their 1 and only food which magically appears when they sit at my table.

It shows up in their inventory in their "gear" tab, and it's randomly a simple meal, fine meal, or packaged survival meal. You might notice dead enemies dropping those if they attacked immediately, and visitors eating them at your table.

nah they defiantly seem to be eating our food again

seems to be when they can't leave the colony for some reason.

Yup. It seems if the outside temps are unsafe they will just mooch at ya base. Not all a group always - but so far I had one guy stay on for over a year. In the end I considered him an honorary member of the colony. Tried a couple of mods to make a bed for him - no luck.

And it was a visitor from a faction, not a crashed spacer?

yup. I was actually working on making a story board on it, so I have screen caps of the whole thing. He eventuallyhad a mental break due to starvation because 'reasons' (I think there was a blight and I didn't notice my packed freezer went to empty and I didn't notice) and wondered off into the snow - not a problem tho! His factions next visit left me with 3 or so new moochers.

"Who's this new guys that's been here for a while, and never cleans the dishes?"

"Great! Now the guy who sleeps on the couch is having partys!"

"Wait, I have to pay for this shit?"

"Well screw that, I'm going home!"

Well, if you want to make a room for guests and make them happy, you can get the "Hospitality" mod wich is currently up to date. Also note that if i see a visitor eating my meals wihout permisson, i'd order my guards to restrain him, unless that visitor is too strong or is a special guest.

This is still a problem in A15. Playing yesterday, visitors walked into my store-room, picked up survival meals, and ate them.

I've had it happen myself. One of my new colonies nearly starved to death because a dozen tribalists visited us without carrying any meals. They completely devoured my remaining survival packs instead.

Raiders on the other hand leave tons of food behind sometimes.
The last tribal raid dropped 3.5k of pemmican on my doorstep.

Maxim 37 : There is no overkill. There is only open fire and reload.
Rule 34 of Rimworld :There is a mod for that.
