Just curious to know what everyone ideal setup is for their first three colonists.

Generally, I go with Either Two Medieval Slaves/ Deep Space Miners, or One of those and One Medieval Slave/ Farm Oaf

And then my third is either a Medieval Slave/ Colony Settler, or sometimes a Medieval Lordling/ Colony Settler.

Basically across the board, not starting with Medieval Slave seems like a waste of time, with the except of the last combo I mentioned which gives you a decent amount of social to work with as well.

I go with whatever is thrown my way. It doesn't really matter that much. Even getting a noble isn't an issue since they are usually decent for science and defense. Though I would probably refuse 3 nobles ;)

But my ideal setup would be 3 settlers or entrepeneurs. Those are in my experience the most useful members of a colony.

I generally prefer specialists as they are more useful long term (it's easy to train a skill from  3 to 7 or 8, but hard beyond that. Growing is one exception as it takes forever to grow anything with low growing skill). On Cassandra, you get loads of time before any real danger show up. Usually my preferred loadout (if I get it) is one oaf, one miner, and one entrepreneur. A scientist isn't too bad either as they let me rush tech in the early game.

On Randy Random I prefer two miners and one scientist. The miners let me set up defensive positions in the mountain while the scientist allows me to rush gun turret cooling. Food isn't that important as Randy Random can potentially throw a strong raider wave on the second day. I just rely on foraging until I can get somebody with at least a 5 in growing.

Of course, I usually take what the game throws me, and if I get a colonist with the runner trait (increased movement speed), they get treated as VIPs regardless of their skills.

I just deal with whatever I get and roleplay a little story in my head. When I got a noble and two farm oafs I played it out like she was a princess stranded on the planet by the accident and the oafs were her servants. Her quarters were magnificent and one of them was dedicated to simply seeing to her needs and making sure her flower pots were tended while the other did all the manual labor.

I don't now, I really like getting those strong Miners, the difference between a 3 and an 8 is incredible but the difference between an 8 and a 12 or a 12 and a 14 is amazing.

Generally I keep mashing the random button till I get a deep space miner with a 3 or more for research.(he will do the researching basically) 1 person with a medieval slave/ collony settler background(allround good worker) and someone who is (semi)decent with a gun(usually getting a +guns background and a +manual labor background, but generally will settle for anything that isn't an assasin or a noble)
