[L|0.0.254b] Game close to unplayable on Intel GMA 4500 MHD - flickering

Summary
The game flickers as hell, doesn't matter if fullscreen or windowed, irrespective of resolution and zoom level. The "canvas" - terrain, buildings, units, etc. is prone to the problem, GUI elements (even if only the architect menu covers part of the "canvas") don't suffer from it. It seems that each frame there is another artifact variation done. I noted that when the colonist droppods land and produce some dust or smoke, the artifacts on the whole screen are slightly less pronounced. After the landing smoke is gone, flickering worsens again. It looks like this:

  • System configuration:
      OS: 64-bit Linux Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS, using MATE desktop environment
      PC: Lenovo ThinkPad T400 notebook
      CPU: Core 2 Duo T9400
      GPU: integrated GMA 4500MHD
      Driver: xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.20.0-0ubuntu0~precise1)
     
      I have installed mono libmono-system4.0-cil and other Mono libraries (2.10.8.1-1ubuntu2.2) in case it could have any side effect
