Base attempt two. this one is so far raider impenetrable

Having a food storage zone directly where the cook stands speeds up food production by about 500%! (he does not need to move at all to get ingredients and cook and place the cooked food)

This is my "killbox" and it turned out to be incredibly effective (though a little expensive in metal)

This is just after a fight, so 2 turrets are missing from the middle.  But the idea is that in order for a raider to shoot at the turret, they need to enter the box.  The sandbags inside give them a place to take cover, which stops them exiting the killbox.   The turrets in this configuration just nail people and very quickly. However larger groups stupidly attack and destroy the turrets, even though 10-15 of their allies are within range of the explosion that's coming.  So combined with the turret fire, sniper fire inside and the exploding turrets, only one or two melee raiders ever make it inside, and are quickly dispatched by my waiting colonists before they an do anything.

Thinking I'm all smart and clever, I build this very mazy entrance way to my colony with plans to fill it specially placed turrets later.  its too early in the game at the moment to actually get those turrets up and running, and I had no stone yet, so I made it out of wood.

Guess what turned up?  an incendiary centipede mech!   As you can imagine, 3 people vs a fire throwing mechanoid on a hot clear day surrounded by wood walls did not go well :p

Oh Randy, I swear you did that to me on purpose

Ideas / Re: Food Rebalance

I would like to see some form of refrigeration unit required to keep a food store cool so that your cooked and prepared food doesn't spoil (at least not as quickly, it shouldn't prevent spoiling).

Of course, that means food actually needs to spoil first

Don't you know the risk of using all those batteries? :P

Update: I finished Hydroponics room 2 and added Hydroponics room 3 to the Hydroponics centre, and of course as soon as I start growing the cotton a solar flare.

Thanks,
EBrown

Somewhat risky having a tonne of batteries in a wooden shed LOL.  I've had them blow up a few times but I just don't see any other way to keep a large colony powered!  Without enough batteries to last 2 days without the sun, your colony goes downhill really quickly! Especially if an eclipse happens to end just as the sun goes down. Im going to try independently powering my different areas of my colony this time, instead of one huge power map.

I am pretty newb to the game, so forgive me if I'm missing some fundamental stuff that would change these ideas.

I personally think mining into mountains is a little too easy. Once your Colony is a decent size, you can cut out entire mountains in a day or two in game. Which is just overboard I think.
Perhaps add another type of rock that is deeper into mountains that is harder to cut through (or better yet, requires a special tool, or dangerous explosives) so that as you get deeper in, the rock becomes harder and takes longer to mine.

I thought sieges were awesome, it gave me another idea.  How about hunters and other specialised groups landing on your map, and setting up their own base to do their own things. They could be neutral or hostile, but not attack you, instead just defend their area.  They could start roaming the map taking resources or killing deer/boar which could inhibit your colony requiring you to take action against them, or change your colony to suit.

Playing with Randy Random when I get my first ever siege. I was totally unprepared for the bandits to be setting up a little base on my map with mortars (and I had none myself to counter). I had no armor to speak of, and only pistols and rifles.

Thinking this band of 20+ vermin with 3 mortars was going to end me, luck quickly turned my way when Randy decided to send a second siege group of the same size from another faction in at the same time, practically next to each other.

These two factions were dire enemies. Needless to say, they did not want to share killing us.  By the time they had sorted out there differences, only 3 bandits had survived and they fled.

I got soo much loot from that encounter :p

Hi All,

Some awesome looking colonies in this thread, I have been inspired!

Here is my humble first attempt at a Colony

I think I might start again after seeing some of the clever ideas in this thread!
