After the forum post asking people how they found the website, I thought I'd create a poll and ask how you found it. Original one is here https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=15249 .
I got interested when CGPGrey said that he plays it. He uploaded a gameplay of his and it looked like something I would like as well. He is a youtuber (former teacher) making educational and entertaining videos. His most popular:
The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10)
He also has a podcast with Brady Haran (Numberphile (https://www.youtube.com/user/numberphile), Sixty Symbols (https://www.youtube.com/user/sixtysymbols) etc) called Hello Internet (http://www.hellointernet.fm/).
Both are good friends with Derek Muller (Veritasium (https://www.youtube.com/user/1veritasium)), Destin Sandlin (SmarterEveryDay (https://www.youtube.com/user/destinws2)) and Henry Reich (MinutePhysics (https://www.youtube.com/user/minutephysics), MinuteEarth (https://www.youtube.com/user/minuteearth)). I really hope one of those rings a bell.
tl;dr: Heard from a YouTuber on a podcast.
I've edited the poll, because I'm interested, to separate gaming website and forum post. These are very different things!
kicked the starter, and have enjoyed ever since
A very obvious option should have been kickstarter..... which I backed
Ok, I've refined the poll and reset the results. Please re-vote.
I don't even remember anymore, all I know is what caught my attention was the pawns shooting at each other from cover etc in the trailer, basically the combat system and relatively large scale / complex firefights the game was able to handle for a DF-type simulation.
Was watching one of my youtubers play simcity or such and got bored so tried watching one of their other videos and got hooked.
I think for me I was a Reddit post that linked to a Youtube video. So I said Other and Streamer/Youtuber.
Edit: updated vote for new options.
Baaam! Ok, what an influence... So far, on a very small number of votes... And only with people looking around on forum as well...

Thanks, I was trying to think of the best options I could.
Also personally, I found out from another family member who games. Saw it, thought it was awesome, watched a youtuber, played the game.
I believe I was watching some Youtube about Prison Architect and then do a Search for "Game like Dwarf Fortress". I've been a Dwarf for ages but take a break and the clip revive my interest in that genre.
I discovered Rimworld from one of the answers given to a "Are there any other games like this?" type of question. But I do not remember if this was a thread on a general gaming/discussion forum (not Reedit though as I have never used that site once), or a post that I read in the comments section to an article/review etc. on a dedicated gaming website. So I voted twice ("forum" and "gaming website") to reflect this.
I discovered Rimworld on Arumba's Youtube channel. I'm a long time subscriber of his & after watching him play Rimworld back when it was in Alpha 7 I thought it looked cool & I finally bought it a little while ago when Alpha 11 came out.
I read about it on some random post at the escapistmagazine.com gaming forum and I'm glad that I did.
Every time an opportunity presents itself, I return the favor by mentioning this game to others.
I learned of it through Scott Manley. Astronomer, Dj and Kerbal extraordinaire on Youtube ;)
Still saw Miss_Jamball playing it. Anything she plays is worth investigating. Unless she's ranting about what a horrible, awful, blot on humanity it is.
If she's screaming at the game though she probably loves it.
I saw a video about the game from Scott Manley, during the KickStarter.
Edit: This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6buo7G1OZw
As I said in the first thread, and this poll verifies it, it's crazy how many people watch other people play video games on youtube. I would much rather play a game as opposed to some guy talking about it as he plays it and watch that lol. I always laugh when I see my son doing it, and I guess I am old or not in the right generation for it as it bores the heck out of me after watching a few minutes(only 29 though lol). To each his own I suppose, as I just youtube to learn things in games/in real life such as tutorial videos on occasion.

I like to watch other people play almost as I like playing most games. :D

I agree. I only view such things when I'm looking for gameplay footage when I'm interested in buying a game.
It's a little different if it's a friend though, in small doses I can do that. However my girlfriend enjoys watching me play games (sometimes she requests it interestingly enough) that have story and voice acting, something with a story to follow. Like GTAV, Red Dead Redemption, and Destiny back when I played those. She's a moderate gamer herself so that's probably part of it. But she doesn't watch Youtubers do it.

Yet people watch sports on TV and have no desire to go play it themselves.
The former is entertainment, the latter is recreation. Playing a game is recreation, but sometimes we just want to be entertained. Not every game will entertain every person - they have to like the game, kind of know what's going on, and have a decent host/player. There's Youtube of course, but Twitch adds a whole new level by allowing direct and immediate interaction with the streamer, often a richer experience than you'd get playing by yourself.

So do I.
As for how I found out about Rimworld:
Yes: Youtube :D
By Blitzkriegsler and Yeti and I also tend to like this sort of games (sandbox/rouge-like).
Found out about it on a thread on 4chan about DF-like games. It looked like the most promising game in the thread, so here I am.
I got interested after watching a video from one of my favorite Youtubers. It was completely off from what he'd normally post, so I decided to give it a try. Not only was the narration amazing, but the story the video told had left me in both a state of amazement and curiosity. Any time I want to introduce a friend to RimWorld (Going on 4 friends now who I've gotten hooked on RimWorld), I simply link them this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEJ6QymV7-o
I like to google for things like "space colony building games" and this Rimworld thing kept popping up there so I gave it a go and never looked back.
Definitely Youtube. It's funny, I originally went on to Youtube to figure out how to play Prison Architect. This was probably a year ago, maybe longer. I found a channel called Stuff+ on Youtube and he's British and specializes in PA. As I was wandering his other Let's Play I saw RimWorld, checked it out (alpha 5, I believe) and it was okay. Earlier this year he did a return to the series with Alpha 9 and I really got into it. Grabbed the game and been a fan since.
As for watching other people play games on Youtube, I do it to learn other strategies. I also do it for entertainment. On my lunch break I can't really play RimWorld so Youtube scratches that itch. It's also great background sound if I'm busy doing something else. It also helps if the Youtuber is entertaining.
Some other fairly pop youtubers to watch for those that are interested. Think I originally learned about it from Quill18. Don't worry, nether of them invest all their time into SUB mining their audience(pet peeve of mine).
Quill
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsZHKyBK51Q&list=PLs3acGYgI1-vXHbq80_1656G4OaHOKUWm
Then later ran across Blitzkriegsler
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5qu86bwLs8&list=PL4D232HeetQO_tR-RPNuXh4RAqlRhjmZV
Latest RW vids I could find on both. Enjoy
Interesting. I'm surprised how many people found it just from random Internet searches.
Yeah. Although Rimworld is similar to other games which makes it easier to find through that, since searching "Games like DF, Prison Architect," and a few other games people have enjoyed will bring them here.
I found the game from watching Sips play it on youtube.
Yogscast Sips did a short series about the game, I was instantly in love with the story telling he did.
A friend of mine told me about the game back in February.
Now RimWorld is my most streamed and probably also played game of 2015. :D

The funny thing about that is I do not watch sports either, because I want to go play, so I don't think that statement is entirely true lol. I used to play football and my father is a hardcore football watcher, and anytime I see him watching it I tend to go in the other room as I get reminded of my good old days and want to play again lol.
Seems I was wrong, it was One F Jef. And wow if you wanna see what RW looked like back in pre-alpha... here's your chance haha. Parental advisory zerp zzzerp..... yeah he doesn't give a fk so you've been warned about the potty mouth. It's not that bad though:) This dudes the one that got me into watching lets plays... You know everyone has the one person that they relate to that nabs em. This was mine :P
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFeR5JnrnGI&list=PL5WMwekqnmUBKo55K1W67oNncSV9195bP
For me it was watching WeaselZone on YouTube. After watching him get several colonies killed off with what I thought were stupid mistakes, I bought the game... And proceeded to run long line of colonies into the ground with "stupid mistakes".
Heh, that'll teach me for thinking I can do better :P
lolz sounds about right ;D
I seriously cannot remeber but i think it was internet search...
Internet search for me and I wasn't even looking for this game - or game like it - but rather was looking up reference work for a model I was working on.
I found the game from a fellow Youtuber "OfficialStuffPlus" and since then have found numerous people that follow the link under my RimWorld YouTube videos.
"Spreading the good word!" :D
Scott manley ftw!
I cant remember where exactly but I think it was a forum post. I loved the game and got a friend of mine playing it as well.
Quill18's youtube let's plays.
I came across Rimworld while I was searching for a colony management-type game.
The game looked to be quite pretty and deep at the time, so i decided to give it a shot and see if it was what I was looking for.
Sadly since the game was in Early-Access and it had no Demo available, I looked up for a version online to torrent or download, and find it I did.
I had some fun with it and once I saw that Patches were coming in monthly and vastly improving the game, I quickly gathered a few bucks and gave Tynan some well deserved bling. XD
Keep up the great work!
I came across it in steam forums for prison architect, some time last year.
It was a discussion on the art style and assets in use early on.. I thought it was worth trying, so bought it, although haven't played it much until recently when I decided to try the ultimate overhaul mod.. and now I'm hooked.
I found out rimworld from yogscast sips, he played it like 2 years ago, a couple months back I also saw kage848 playing and decided to buy the game.
I can say, I saw the kick starter from the beginning and thought it was very interesting. Little rough at first but after the first 3 updates I decided I needed to back it. I can say I'm glad to be a pirate king backer and I look forward to what will come.
Went through the post real quick and I'm apparently the only one coming from Sacriel.
This is surprising to me as he's the (one of the) biggest streamer (to my knowledge) that stream Rimworld from time to time.
Anyway, go 42nd !
o7
I'm surprised so many people found it directly through Kickstarter.
Are you guys really just cruising Kickstarter, looking for things to back?
Yes, but only from time to time.
RimWorld just happened to be there one of those times 8)
don't be afraid to say you were looking to spend money into witness :D
I found out about it through a gaming humor page on FB. Someone had a pregnant male colonist. Why that made me buy the game I'll never know.
Saw it mentioned on Steam in relation to another (forgotten and subpar) game, Googled it.
Sacriel on Twitch. I had been a watcher due to his DayZ content and one day I turn on to his stream and he's playing RW. Thought it looked interesting so I continued. Few hours later I bought the game and spent probably 2-3 days of playing it like 12 hours a day.
It was really interesting because when I was considering whether to purchase or not, I had a bit of difficulty. I really was interested in the game but this was a few Alpha's ago and I thought $30 for a game this early is a bit steep. I didn't want to get burned by it but I said screw it, and bought it anyway. Year later and still agree that I made the right call and the $30 was so worth it.
If only I could see how many hours I have.

Yes, I do that at least once a week. Do you think there's a support group for that...?
learned about the game from good ol' Sips
Through Youtube.

I do while at work and it's slow, yes.
I found Rimworld before Kickstarter, however; but I do look back now at completed Kickstarters (ones that happened well before my time) just to compare their goals to what was delivered and seeing how it left their backers feeling. I'm actually looking into getting Divinity: Original Sin just because of how quickly their Kickstarter sequel met its funding (12 hours) - clearly a lot of people were impressed with them.
I'm not certain where exactly though I'm pretty sure it was through some youtuber or streamer tweeting out the kickstarter either that or the description section of a video not sure which. But either way I've been enjoying the game bugs and all.
The mighty bastard Sips himself showed me this gem :D

Yep, same here, people ripping their d..s off all around :D
It was on the Prison Architect steam forum. People were claiming it was ripping of the graphics of Prison Architect.
So I was curious as I loved PA. So checked out Christonians "lets play" and knew I had to own this game.
I stumbled into Rimworld while searching for DF and Aurora 4X style games, it was named in a good number of sites and forum. Sudden love obviously!
i found out about it because i liked prison architect and was watching a streamer where people brought rimworld up, been hooked ever since and easily one of my favorite games of current for a while.
I found it a year ago, when I was searching for sci-fi themed games. I saw it on a random website, and I wanted to give it a go.
