Title: Mountain Colonies vs Open Colonies: Post your best colony pictures and vote!
Post by: LouisTBR on August 27, 2016, 10:42:06 AM
Hello! I thought i would create a thread discussing colony types, and which one is best! It would be brilliant if you could vote for your favourite colony type... PART 2: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=25101.0
It would be brilliant if you could all post your colony screenshot, and I will add a Part 2 with a new poll (once we get to 3 Colonies+) with a 'Best colony' poll, in which you can vote for your favourite colony.

Vote limit is 2.

My preference is usually to build my colony in between mountains - but not into the mountains themselves (to avoid insects). What category would that be? ;)

Open, but it depends on whether it is sprawled or quite tight for space  :D

Always open and colony enclosed. If I see a mountain at the center of the map or inside the future perimeter of my colony, I restart the map

That sounds like a good idea. Have you got a screenshot of a colony you have made like this?

Before Alpha 13 I think, I always went with a tight enclosed mountain colony with a funnel to make defense easy. However since infestations and sappers were introduced, I've moved away from that type of colony. Now I like a tightly enclosed colony, often with no walls around the perimeter. and I tend not to add turrets until later when the raids start outpacing your colonists. I often have the food storage, mess hall and hospital in the center then build into and around it I have my workshops and bedrooms. All made of stone so when I get raided I have my pawns engaged in proper door to door, city brawling and fighting, picking off raiders when they're isolated.

Of course, 95% of my colonies fail but I do always go for Randy on Extreme/Perma and I pick random colonists and sometime random location, but I'm also probably pretty piss poor at this game. So, I don't know how effective this layout actually is.

Yes, this used to be my favourite layout too :P
I generally build unplanned, starting with a huge freezer and a smallish kitchen in which colonists sleep and the batteries live etc.
Then I move the colonists into separate rooms and start upgrading the base outwards with pointless stuff and end up devastated by tribal raiders ;)

I don't have any current pictures, so I made a quick scetch in god mode. This is my goal layout for every open base when I play with a lot of mods. Last time I managed to build outer walls with embrasures and everything during A13. :P

Main storage is 17x17, four rectangles are 27x47. Comfortable for 18 colonists, now for more thanks to double beds. There's space for every modded industry you can dream of.

I recommed using this on maps with slower travel speed, snowy or jungle, so you can man the walls long before enemies get to them.

Defending is easy, just get few miniguns.

Open in the middle at start.
Ends up tightly packed into the near mountains around.

7th ingame year, cassandra rough, sunrise 6am with fog and edited weather Colors. (Xml)

Your base looks really useful in all aspects 8) I will add it to the poll in Part 2 but it might be a good idea to furnish it a bit to show  how it looks in an actual colony 😊

Hmm, I sometimes play around with mixed colonies, but I have never adventured into the later years as my colony either deteriorates or gets boring :P Your colony looks brill btw 8)

Here is my general design for a colony. I like open areas and I cut all trees arround it.

This game is great because it mixes strategy with movie plot, base defense, designing, farming simulator and much mucho more  ;D

Nice post!
My pattern is quite medieval - most important buildings are behind a thick wall, double gates (doors) and some keeps/bunkers. (No killboxes though). Then comes a layer of houses and some less important storages and workshops, barn surrounded by thin (sometimes wooden) walls. On the most outside layer I build farms, prison (the hell with them, run if you want, I don't want a riot near my hospital) and guesthouse (I always play with hospitality mod :) )
I know it's not most effective way to build but I like it that way ^^

Same! I build inwards-out and, like you, only with the Hospitality mod  ;)
Title: Re: Mountain Colonies vs Open Colonies: Post your best colony pictures and vote!

It has disadvantages though - I have had my guests slaugthered multiple times by now during sieges/raides/manhunter packs. Once they also died because I kinda... Well... Forgot to put a cooler in the guesthouse. However most of the visitors leave my town happy and untouched! :D
Title: Re: Mountain Colonies vs Open Colonies: Post your best colony pictures and vote!
Post by: LouisTBR on August 29, 2016, 07:15:34 AM
Brilliant  ;D I tend to build a lovely guest house straight from the off while my colonists are still sleeping on the ground outside...
Title: Re: Mountain Colonies vs Open Colonies: Post your best colony pictures and vote!
Post by: Ceglaaa on August 29, 2016, 07:55:23 AM
Well, to be honest, they're less important to me than my colonists and my animals so they have to deal with the dangers on their own :P
I was once considering building some turrets to protect the guesthouse but it ended up killing more of them than the raiders :P
Title: Re: Mountain Colonies vs Open Colonies: Post your best colony pictures and vote!
Post by: LouisTBR on August 29, 2016, 07:59:01 AM
Haha ;D

I find the best thing in early game with the Hospitality Mod is to focus on the visitors, as you gain colonists, faction relationship and some of the stuff they were trading :P

Well, I prefer more xenophobic attitude. It's more fair toward my colonists.
*stares at the wooden guesthouse, smirking, before ordering yet another marble colony house to be built*

Then I realise I care more about the people who have served me and decide to help them a bit... Now who do wish says that in their next press conference?

My first colonies I have all built in the mountain. But at some point I could no longer hear the eternal whining. " Too dark " "Too ugly ".  ::)
My current colony I have built in a hilly landscape outside. And I like it. It is much more flexible in the planning . The initial phase was pretty tiring, but after I built up a good defense , it is a bit more relaxed.

The only thing I'd change is make the battery rooms bigger so there can be space between the batteries. If one explodes they will all explode in that configuration.

My new started A15 base.
Cassandra Challenge
most game changing mods : deadly forest mod and realistic lights(darkness) mod

in the south my only entrance with my grizzly bear areas in front.
they killed several tribal raids on their own. :D
their Little bear-cave and the built pillars around help them alot to get into melee better and not get shot at from afar.
behind my little killbox.
rest is self explanatory.

it is by far not my best base, but i like it cause of the rivers and lakes in it.
it has this magical touch in it.

I know, I know it's such a beautiful and irriplaceable base. No need to tell me
Hoping to make it more.. Grand? later on down the when I can spare the time to fully mine and construct.

Conveniently - Well i started with female colonists and picked through the game only female colonists, and scenario has forced trait gay on everyone, so all female colony
Outfits - trumbo/devilstrand dusters and devilstrand button-down shirts and pants, white a trumbo dusters, red are devilstrand, this game is running long time, and i have a lot of trumbos.

Nice colony Simon! I'll add it this Sunday :P
I'm trying a new system (Suggested) where I add colonies every Sunday, and restart the voting each week. The winner (Most voted in that week) gets a mention in the thread and in my signature. Any colonies that get no votes are deleted.
