Title: How to install RimWorld after you've downloaded it
Post by: Tynan on December 10, 2014, 03:42:55 PM
If you downloaded DRM-free:

1. Download the game file from your personal download link that was sent to you via email.

What you downloaded is a 'zip file'. This is a sort of 'container' file that packages a bunch of other files together. The actual game files are inside the zip file. To actually play the game, the game files all need to be extracted to outside the zip file, and they need to be together.

To extract the files:

2. Open the downloaded zip file by double-clicking it.

3. A window will pop up. It will show the contents of the zip file. In this case it will show a single folder named something like 'RimWorld651Win'.

4. Drag this folder from the zip file to some other folder on your drive.

-> If you wish, you can drag it to the desktop. I recommend making a new folder (like C:/Programs/RimWorld) and dragging it there.

-> Make sure you don't drag it over another installation of RimWorld! The files will mix together and the game won't work.

5. Now close the zip file. Open the newly-extracted folder. You'll see the .exe file you can run to play the game.

-> I recommend making a shortcut to the exe file. On Windows, right-click it and select 'Send to Desktop shortcut'.

How do you use the custom save folder function? I can't seem to get it working from the Readme instructions.

6. If you have problem with zip files download 7zip or Winrar.

Well there is no exe. Also no folder called Rimworld. The mac version just look like this when I open it:

Contents
Mods
Source

Under "Contents" there is only this file that resembles what I should search called "Rimworld834Mac". Now its a mystery what I have to do. No idea.

To run the Mac version you run the whole package by double-clicking on it. The package is the top level folder that you extracted from the zip file.

I downloaded this game again having taken a nearly year-long hiatus. I cannot play it.

I have the Windows version and I have the exact same problem. There is no .exe file of any kind. It looks like just the data archives. Also, Tynan announced an update on July 4 but I never received an email from SendOwl about this. What gives? I'm hoping this is just some oversight, but surely I'm not the only one to download the game and attempt to install it since July 4th!

Update:

I just re-downloaded it for the 3rd time and finally it looks correct. The first download must have just arbitrarily not included the .exe file (!?). The second download just... didn't even finish. I'll assume it works but will post again if it doesn't.

Hello, I just bought Rimworld today, and I tried to install it.

The first time, it worked fine (got through the title splash, generated a world and some colonists, etc). I then backed out and installed some mods.

When I "turned the mods on", I probably also turned off the "core" module, but I had to Alt-Tab to kill the program, as it froze.

I looked up what was happening (loads to black screen + cursor when clicking on the application file)  once I tried to restart the game, and I realized what I had done.

I have reinstalled the game several times now ( I only have 3 installs left for Windows), only to notice that the .zip file has the Rimworld.exe file, and when I extract it to my computer ( C:/Rimworld and C:/Programs (x86)/Rimworld, respectively), the application in the extract folder lacks the .exe file.

Any indication of what I should do? I can attach a log if it is necessary, and I cannot find my dave game configs, as my computer just goes C:/Users/(me)/AppData/Local. Nothing about Ludeon or Rimworld

--EDIT-- Fixed. I am rather computer-illiterate, apparently.

I'm not so good with computers, I followed what i think i'm supposed to do and when i try to open rimworld it says "Data folder not found, There should be "Rimworld914_WinData" folder next to the executable.

I'm not sure how to fix this but hopefully one of you guys know, cheers.

when you extracted the files from the zip, did you grab ALL the files or just the exe?
if it was just the exe/application, then that is why you got the error, you NEED to extract ALL the files and folders.
just another stupid thought, had you tried to run the application from INSIDE the zip?
if yes, THAT is why, you NEED to extract(copy out of) all the files from the zip to another area, (eg. a folder on the desktop), then run the exe in the location you extracted the files to.

I bought the game a long time ago, and since I couldn't update it, I forgot about the game.  I also sent an email a long time ago about this problem, but it was never replied to.  I'm hoping I can be helped now.

Thanks.

I'm trying to extract the .zip and each time I try, it says that it could not open the archive, may be damaged. When I go to look at the file, it looks like mostly everything was extracted but the .exe. Before I run through all of my 7 downloads, I have followed the instructions on this thread and it's still not working. I'd appreciate some help. :(

Try restarting your computer then reextract, I had something similiar happen recently to a friend of mine. Restarting seemed to fix that.

Sounds like an incomplete/broken download somehow. You'll want to make sure your Internet isn't getting cut off or somehow corrupting the file.

@awseomenathan987, thanks for reaching out.

Did your friend buy a key for you?  If not, you're out of luck and you'll have to actually purchase the game.  If you do have a valid key, is it for SendOwl or Steam?  If Steam, see the link in my signature.  If SendOwl, go to the Missing Your Download Email thread (stickied in the Support forum).

If you have any trouble, please post an update for us.

I bought Rimworld a couple years ago, and can't remember which email I used to buy it with. I was wondering if there was a way to find out what email I used, so I don't end up throwing away my steam key

Notsopro, you can search your emails for your original purchase email or any SendOwl update. Should be easy to find.

At suggestion of another forum member, I'm putting in the steps, with examples, to take to get the game running with a custom location. If any of the mods would prefer this somewhere else, or in its own thread, please let me know, or feel free to move it yourself of course!

This example is for my testing setup for the EpicOmega modpack. This process is not contingent on using mods, running vanilla Rimworld would have the same process, less adding and ordering the mods. I'll list steps I use to set this up:

1. Copy Rimworld folder to desktop (that is where this example is located, works anywhere else just as well)
2. Rename folder to something as short as possible, yet still descriptive enough to know what it is. (in this example it is "RWEpic", shortened from Rimworld EpicOmega)
3. Within "RWEpic" folder, right click on the Rimworld exe file and select copy.
4. Back at desktop, right-click and paste a shortcut to the just copied file. I then rename the shortcut to match its install folder (in this example "RWEpic")
5. So, I now have a Folder and Shortcut both named RWEpic
5. Within RWEpic folder, make and name a new folder where you will store your data/config. (in my example the new folder is named "EpicData", but it can be anything)
6. Double click that folder so that Windows Explorer is looking into the empty folder.
7. Go into address bar in windows explorer and right click and select "Copy address as Text"
8. Back at desktop, Right click on RWEpic shortcut and select properties.
9. In Target field, go to end of what is already present, leaving quotes in place, add a space and then the switch -savedatafolder=
10. I then put a " mark and paste that address I had previously copied, followed by a closing " mark
11. Here is the current line in the target field of the shortcut at this point:

"C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\RWEpic\RimWorld1557Win.exe" -savedatafolder="C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\RWEpic\EpicData"

12. Click "OK" to save everything.
13. I then launch the game with the shortcut which will allow the game to create the folder structure inside my "EpicData" data folder.
14. I set my normal game options... Turn off "Plant sway", Set Volumes, Turn off "Learning Helper", etc.
15. exit game
16. Go into "RWEpic" folder, then into "EpicData" folder to make sure all folders are there. If they aren't, a mistake was made during creation of shortcut. More than a couple times I have forgotten to do something correctly and have had to re-make that shortcut, whether it was a bad copy paste, a misspelling of the switch, any other little thing.
17. (skip if not using mods) Now I load all my mods into the mod folder.
18. (skip if not using mods) Launch game and go into mods and set all mods in correct order.
19. (skip if not using mods) Exit game.
20. Relaunch game and play!

and(for windows players DRM free only(do not know if this can work for the steam  linux and apple players as I do not have steam, linux or apple)) if you create a batch file in the rimworld folder with the contents of the batch file (for the a17b version) being
".\RimWorld1557Win.exe" -savedatafolder=SaveData
(and the SaveData can be ANY valid folder name) you can have all the mods, settings and the game all in the one folder, the batch runs the rimworld version and rimworld then creates the folders and files it needs for a fresh start.
then all the player has to do is copy the mods that are wanted into the mods folder inside the SaveData folder and activate the mods.
and it is possible for the rimworld and SaveData to be on usb's or external hdds or file servers as long as there is read, write and execute privilges for the location that the rimworld is on
