Back at it, this time for a more traditional playthrough in A17. We start in a pretty nice spot though, caught at a junction between an old asphalt road, a new stone road, and a river. Should make for an interesting challenge.

Two people find love in our first episode, and we get ourselves remarkable well sorted for our first day on this rim world.

Off-Topic / King Under the Mountain

Got an email about this the other day. It's a Rimworld inspired game but with a fantasy theme. Kinda how I imagine Rimworld would have started if it hadn't gone the sci-fi route. It's pretty barebones at the moment, but they've a long feature list and a Kickstarter coming at the end of the month.

Here's a brief video of gameplay if anyone's interested, and their website.

So here's something a little different. It's a slightly modified Rich Explorer start with two people and a special rule not to recruit anyone and have all wanderer and refugee events turned off. The goal? Get off this rock. The planet's fully generated though, so it's a long, long way to the spaceship...

Any advice, tips, or the like greatly appreciated; and you can follow my progress here:

Welp, there's so much to cover in A16 that it's difficult to know where to start! Finally deciding on a tropical rainforest in very close proximity to two pirate bases and two outlander towns we set up our first colony. The plan is to have 5 bases (the maximum currently allowed) and regularly run trade routes between them. We're also going to run caravans, try out the new tech tree, and a bunch of other stuff. It's going to be a long series!

So, the last colony didn't go so well.

This time will be different. There'll be no more lovesick colonists refusing the save the girl who rejected them, or random shots that blow out someone's spine, or fanatic pacifists who'd rather watch their home burn down rather than fight. No no, no more of that!

Video / Rimworld Alpha 14 | We landed on a beach!
July 15, 2016, 09:03:00 PM
This is a tutorial-lite let's play of vanilla Rimworld Alpha 14/Steam release. It's the traditional crashlanded scenario in a temperate biome.

Our three heroes are a motley bunch; a failed writer turned bodyguard, a woman who just loves starting fires, and a former soldier liable to kick off at any time all come bound by survival on this forgotten rimworld. But hey, at least they're at the beach - right?

Support / Odd delay in Saving/Loading

Fired up Rimworld today for the first time in a little while and I've noticed something very strange.

When hitting the Load Colony button (from the main menu), or the Save Colony button (once in a game) Rimworld hangs. The application continues running normally, and it will eventually complete the operation, but it's taking 30 seconds to a minute to bring up the appropriate screen.

I've never encountered this behaviour before, and it seems only to affect the 914 build of the game (previous versions, including 911, operate as expected).

Any ideas what might be happening here?

Stories / Darkwood

Kinda wanted to share my colony. It's definitely my longest running, is almost entirely outdoors, and deals with both temperature extremes (temperate forest that gets in the mid-30s during summer, and negative 20 or so during winter. So, here's the colony: http://i.imgur.com/oJzREGf.png and here are three diary excerpts from the founding colonists of Darkwood at different points in time from founding to now.

Harper 'Harp' Crowley - September 5500

I signed up for this... well, not this exactly, but close enough to this - the frontier life. Of course, I had been under the impression that it would be me and a bunch of other, similarily-minded people, but that's my bad. Instead I'm saddled with a long retried soldier in his fifties, and some washed-up urbworld businesswoman. They sound like frontier colonists to you? Want the kicker? Those two are so old that my guess is they won't make it through the winter! In what you might consider good news I finally got the blasted communication system up, but no one seems to want to give any of us a ride. Alita says someone will eventually, but right now we've got to focus on staying alive. I don't think she believes that any more than I do.

We're all just muddying our way through this, hoping to make it out the other side. So I'm keeping to myself mostly and trying not to make a fuss. Wish Dmitri did the same. That war changed him. He doesn't talk about it, but he's jumpy as all hell and I'm pretty sure he's making some hooch on the side without telling us...

Alita Shion - December 5502

This is the first time I've seen the sun in almost a year. I remember it like yesterday - you felt it first, vibrations running through the earth followed by an ungodly bang. It wasn't long until the growing cloud in the distance blanketed the sky. We saved what plants we could, but there was almost nothing to harvest. The last of the winter snow had only just burned away and we had only been half way through seeding. It didn't help that the winter hadn't gone particularly well either. If that trader hadn't come along with a brace of chickens and a cargo hold full of hay we wouldn't have made it.

We did make our peace with the nearby tribespeople off the foot of that nightmarish time though. Honestly I think that they were more convinced by that supervolcano erupting than they were by me releasing some of their people but it worked. That's what I tell all those folk we have locked up. It'll work out, if they help out. They all come around, eventually, even if it's probably more to do with wanting fresh air than actually believing in the life we're making here.

Dmitrius 'Dmitri' Orrendelius - February 5505

We buried Clarke today. What was left of him anyway. The charge rifle had burned away most of his face and left him riddled with burn marks. Alita said a few words. Alita always had few words. Didn't know Clarke much myself, but he was a good shot and never shirked from any kind of work. He'll be missed.

His death puts things in perspective. Five years on this Rimworld. Five long years. Hordes of tribesmen, gangs of pirates, all manner of natural disasters... and then there are the mechanoids. It seems I can't escape them. They killed my parents, they killed most of my buddies in the wars, and still they keep coming. It wasn't the mechanoids which killed Clarke though. No, some pirate raider stormed into his bedroom and lit him up. Random, senseless, just poor dumb luck. That's the way of things out here.

Its not without its perks though. No one here to tell you to attack a wave of mechanoids for instance. That's a plus. Nobody seems to mind me drinking a bit to keep my nerves in check too, and Haskel does really fancy work making some nice clothes.

That's a life worth living. Right?

Support / Alpha 7 frequent freezing
October 03, 2014, 12:40:16 AM
Edit: Some trial and error later and I discovered the problem. Running power conduits from a geothermal to my main power network seems to be the root of it, as when I cancelled all those and went a rather different path the 'freezing' disappeared.

I'm experiencing a strange issue in Alpha 7. The game freezes for a second or less consistently every minute or so past a certain point. Perhaps pausing might be more accurate as the game doesn't lock-up or return a "Not responding" error in Task Manager when it happens. I did time it, and it seems to go through its momentary pause roughly on the half hour and again on the hour in game time.

An earlier save didn't have this pausing issue. It was only from 20 minutes before the problem manifested, so pop count etc was all the same. I played on from that save, but the problem returned almost exactly. It seems to happen during the first night of August (so 1 Aug leading into 2 Aug). I did different things, just in case somehow whatever I did caused the problem, but it reappears with remarkable consistency.

It isn't late-game lag. I have 10 people on the smallest medium map size, with few raiders so far. I loaded up a few of my Alpha 6 saves (20-30+ people, lots of stuff beyond my base etc etc) in my old installation folder and those saves don't have this issue (there is some stuttering, but only when enemies appear).

I've checked for updated drivers etc, and they're all good. I tried windowed mode, at various resolutions, and I've also forced the game to run with a dedicated graphics card. None of these have resolved the issue. Any ideas as to what the problem might be, or how it could be fixed?

Specs: Win7 (64 bit), i7-2630QM @2GHZ, 8GB ram, Nvidia 540M.

Attached is the output_log.txt if that helps.
