What are you mostly having trouble with? food? raids?

Save scumming, best answer
"For you, the day Randy graced your colony with a game-ending raid was the most memorable part of your game. But for Cassandra, it was Tuesday"

First thing I do upon landing is assign each colonist a major priority. Be sure to manually assign priorities, so your miner mines before building for instance. You will most likely need a dedicated miner, grower, and chef. All colonists can take care of things like hauling and construction.

  • Make sure you have at least one doctor, preferably two. Medical skill is really only important in surgeries though, it's not all that important for treating simple things.
  • Scout the map before you build anything. Build near the highest concentration of steam vents for easy geothermal access later.
  • Be sure to tell colonists to rest until healed when sick. You might lose them to the flu if you don't make sure they don't get enough rest.
  • Use vents so you don't need to build heaters and coolers for every room.
  • Avoid using metal for furniture and walls whenever possible, it could be used for more important things later on.
  • Learn and use the new allowed area system, it will tell your colonists where they can and cannot go. It will save your sanity by preventing colonists from attempting to bury dead raiders in the middle of a battle or whatever.

That's all I can think of for right now! Good luck!

Also, just remembered, make sculptures out of wood for some extremely easy early money. A good artist can turn a hunk of wood into something worth hundreds of silver.

If they are able to do the specific job.

Interesting idea, but don't do this on a map with low amount of trees, like desert. As mentioned above, you will need the wood for structures.

To build a working colony, you should focus on basic things before luxuries, especially when you come from Alpha 7 where this wasn't a question that might be a problem. For example crafting clothes is not a priority to survive, but things like food supply (I'm not a fan of early game cook, use NPD, the cook has more important things to do), rooms for all your colonists (gets rid of several bad thoughts at once), reasearch, power supply and defenses.
I think it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to start building a colony as you did in Alpha 7, because the vital things are the things you're familiar with, the new stuff is mostly for mid to late game to optimize your colony and keep your colonists happie, which can easily be done with a horesshoe in the early game.

start with one grower, a miner and a scientist with medic and social. hit space at the start, look out for geysirs and maybe structures to start with.

when i start a new game, first thing i do is to assing 2 growing zones 8x5 with potatos and strawberrys, building a room with wooden beds and a cooking place (or go hunting if you can't grow). then i straight go to build a research table and start researching the geothermal power. when i got the power, i'll build a freezer - a storage with a -10 cooler. now start to store meals as long and fast as you can. also store the foods as long you got no meals.

now till food is safe, start to build up your base. don't build fast - take your time to plan sections for working, growing, sleeping and so on. try to build a fort with roofed hallways and open yards, with inner and outer rings.

thats my current fort. got a toxic fallout for many month - but business is running well :)
