One colonist is without joy

Early mid-game, with six colonist.  One goes berserk on me regularly.  He is "too smart" and a "heat lover", no other special attributes.  He is ALWAYS totally joy deprived.  I have (2) horseshoe stakes, a chess table with chairs, a dining table, and a telescope.  I have him set to 6 hours of joy activities per day, and he is still joy deprived.  No other colonist has this problem.

Playing Random Randy at the Rough level.

Any ideas?  This guy is driving me nuts!

Maybe that's too much joy time?  don't joy activities become less effective the more frequently they are done.

I'd probably try giving him booze and kill the joy time til it resets some?

I dunno.

joy is not just the joy items. It is also the work they do that they have a passion for. Give him jobs that he has a passion for. Also need space for the other joy activities, of meditating, praying, going for a walk, star gazing, cloud watching, building a snowman in the cold....

Too smart raises the break threshold greatly.

There is a workaround for this, if you go to Health -> Operations -> Euthanize.  Also you can lock him in a room and eventually the problem will be solved.

some people, all they think of is death to solve problems.

Or sales ;)

But yeah, he should be passionate about his work. Also, give him social opportunities and nice food and beer.

Providing additional joy activities is always ideal. While you may not have too few for normal colonists, you might want to try a television and maybe stock up some chocolate for him in particular. Also, make sure you don't have him restricted to a zone that would prevent him from using joy activities. (I would suggest monitoring him to make sure he's actually using the facilities.)

Also, for reference, these are the kinds of joy:

• Meditative (thinking or spiritual type activities, e.g. going for a walk, praying, cloudwatching, etc.)
• Gaming [Dexterous] (horseshoes and pool table)
• Gaming [Cerebral] (chess table)
• Social (campfire, dining table)
• Study (telescope)
• Passive (television)
• Gluttonous (namely chocolate, but other foods can be used too)

Drinking may be another type too, but I rarely brew beer, so I don't know.

Also, even though it doesn't build up resistance like normal joy tasks, having a character work in a skill they are passionate about does increase joy very very slightly. That's all the more reason to have pawns pursue their double-flames, imo.

Thanks all.  I started out with 2 hours of Joy per colonist, which seems to work for most, but not this guy.  I will back off on this guy and just give him optional time to use as he sees fit.

No beer yet, although getting close.  He is working on the things he is best at, but I'll remove things he is just ok at to be safe.

it is not what he is good at, the numbers from 1 to 20, but the passion flames. Working at a job that they have a passion for gives them joy, and that alone will keep most colonist joy filled.

Sorry, that is what I meant... I've focused him on passion flame tasks.  Alas, he only has single flames, but suppose every little bit helps.

You can mouse over his joy need in the needs tab to see what kinds of joy he's become tolerant to. Try to provide joy sources of other kinds.

Thanks Tynan, I hadn't realized I could do that.  He doesn't have any tolerances.
