Is there a way to remove floating, overhead mountain 'roofs'?

I've played a few games now where it's not very clear whether there are mountains overhead. Built roofs come crashing down, but the dark spots are all I'm given with cleared mountain space. It took me a while to realize they were the cause of one of my wind turbines not working.

So can they be mined out? They don't seem to come crashing down like built roofs do without support.

Overhead mountain  can not be removed. Thin rock roofs can be. There is a "Expand no roof area" tool in the orders section which allows you to remove constructed/thin roofs, but it will not apply to overhead mountain.
(There are mods that allow you removal of overhead mountain though)

I really wish we could make some sort of explosive to clear out thick roof area. All the time I am trying to build my base, but one small hill is in the way.

It doesn't really make sense that you can't clear it away, after you let it collapse, it should take 1 tile off the perimeter of the roof, then we can cause repeated collapses to eat away at the overhead mountain. An infinite overhead mountain above a 1x1 tile (or any amount of tiles for that matter) just doesn't compute with me.

IRL when a cave collapses it doesn't mean whole mountain collapses...

Correct, but it also doesn't have an infinite amount, the edges/entrances are thinner, so collapsing them a few times should clear them away, with an increasing number of collapses required the deeper in the mountain/hill you go.

IRL, when you mine out the entirety of the base of a mountain, it doesn't stay floating in midair with, at most, a few dropped rocks on occasion.

You could also simply activate dev mode -> debug actions -> tool: delete roof. Since all it costs to kill regular roofs is time, I don't consider this much of a cheat. More of an aesthetic thing.
