Tynan: Question about Char Generator

How exactly does the character generator determine starting skills & limit background options?

The more I play, the more I notice... unusual combinations. Like a cult child who has Research disabled who grows up to be a Navy Scientist with Research +8. Or a Ranch Owner who has Animals +8 who only has an Animals 4 rank (there were no Animals penalties in his other background). Or a 15-year old who has an Adult background as well as a Childhood one.

How are the base skill levels determined? Is there any restrictions to Adult background based on Child background, or is it all randomized?

It's all random.

The skills are generated to baseline level from the backstories. Then, an age-based random process adds additional points to them depending on age.

Does it just add points? Or can it subtract them as well?

Tynan

I can't remember.

You can decompile the code and find out!

These random inconsistencies could be fixed by having the generator automatically reroll the adult background profession if that background have points in a skill that its child background disabled; though even if it sounds like an easy fix it doesn't necessarily need to be and might be problematic considering backgrounds that disable a lot of skills. So I dunno. Personally it's not something I mind, and it's often the elusive bugs and imperfections that shape a games character anyway. x3

Tynan, I'm pretty sure you said when I asked that yes, there can be negative modifiers.

if a skill is disabled by a background trait, then maybe passions and skill gain (from the aging process) should avoid modifying those disabled skills, so the character makes more sense.

Speaking of characters
I have "for example" Emmie, Sex slave in my colony
And i see another colony have the exact same character too.
How is that possible?

I noticed that too, there are some characters which shared names and background in different colonies over time.

I swear I've seen the same name as a faction leader in at least 3 different games.

You mean that Emmie, don't you?

But now that I think about it it's clear, this is one character that someone created as the reward from the "Backstory in Game Pack" version of the game.

Also that would explain why Mike saw the same faction leader several times, there is after all also a "pirate king pack" :P

Sometimes the answer is so obvious that you don't see it immediately  ;D

Me too, as a pirate leader Kit, Researcher.
Same name, same skills, simmiliar adulthood
