Why do solar flares kill hydroponic plants so quickly?

Okay I get that the hydroponic bin loses power so the lighting and watering systems fail(assuming you can't manually water it) but there is still dirt and air, yet a solar flare kills everything in less than half a day. On top of that you have crop blights. This seems like double dipping into the same penalty. Worse case it should drop the growth rate to that of outdoor plants during the power loss or less, but not outright kill everything.

After all, plants outside don't die every night there isn't rain.

I think it's more of a balancing thing. Hydroponics yield an incredible amount when used properly. There have to be some downsides to avoid making them overpowered.
The only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down.

but there is still dirt

The thing about hydroponics is there isn't actually any dirt. Hydroponics involves flowing nutrient rich water over the root system continuously and because there is no dirt nutrient absorption is much faster resulting in increased growth rates and crop yields. Without the flowing water, the root system dries up and dies fairly quickly.

I've read about some hydroponic style systems utilizing specialized soils. Perhaps not most of them, I guess.

I still maintain and completely obliterating all crops map wide in less than a day is a bit overkill. Slower growth, less yield, or something slightly less drastic would be nice. With multiple growers scrambling for it, I wasn't even able to harvest much of what I had before they all died.

Since solar flares seem so common and there is nothing you can do about it combined with the fact at least 4 events affect farming I dunno, just seemed perhaps a bit heavy handed. Either that or make solar flares not affect battery powered things under x many tiles of mountains, since the extra shielding.

Rice grows so fast that it isn't usually an issue as far as food goes. You should have store up enough food to wait out one cycle.
