In the game your currency is silver.
To be able to trad the silver for items ,it has to be inside the trade beacon circle.
On the trade screen how much silver is inside the circle is displayed at the very top.
It may be working as intended, but
what was intended is not working.

It's a bit confusing indeed since the trades show the dollar currency sign ($), while you're actually trading in silver

Also, silver must be in your stockpile to show up in the upper left hand corner of your screen. It also has to be within range of an orbital trade beacon to be used in trades through your comms console.

I think. I'm still new at this..

It also can't have a roof over it.  Anything with a roof is inaccessible for trade.

Silver is the currency of the game. Silver needs to be in a stockpile in order to show up in the top left. But in order to be used for trade it needs to be inside the cover of a trade beacon.

Just adding this as confirmation of previous statements.

To clarify, in game;
$1 = 1 silver

Happy gaming!

To clarify even more, in Rimworld, the currency is $ilver :D
I like how this game can result in quotes that would be quite unnerving when said in public, out of context. - Myself

The dubious quotes list is now public. See it here

You don't really have money (in my interpretation) per se, you just have stuff.  Silver happens to be the baseline/fixed value commodity so it sort of works as currency (but can also be mined and/or used as a crafting resource).  The only stuff that is counted for you is stuff in stockpiles.  And others have stated, the only stuff that is applicable to trading has to be within the radius of a trade beacon.
