While I agree entirely, Tynan is entitled to do whatever he wants, it's his company, and his prerogative... The people defending a 6 month vacation as something remotely normal clearly don't live in the real working world.

I've run my own company, going on the 14th year now.  It's not by any means small, and I can tell you with certainty, I've never taken a 6 month leave, heck, I've never taken a full 1 month leave.  6 Months in my industry would be absolutely unheard of, people who do that, normally do so after cashing/selling out.

I very much doubt Tynan is on vacation in the terms a working man thinks... He is taking a 6 month break from rimworld, but that does not mean he is not creating, learning, and recharging.

As Tynan said in his post, It is not a vacation like one of us would take.

Well, it is a vacation in that I'm traveling around, but I brought my laptop and I'm online accomplishing things regularly.

Really, as with many things in remote work, the traditional line between vacation and not-vacation just isn't useful to describe these situations.

Also I'll just unsticky this since the answers are on the FAQ and the blog now.

For passionate creative types (some developers, artists, authors, musicians, etc) there is no such thing as a vacation in the traditional sense. While most people work in order to live, these types work because it is living. Vacation in that sense is just a change of pace, scenery, or focus, so travel and side projects are the perfect way to keep yourself healthy and strong.

As a developer that has recently moved to 100% remote work, I've been toying with the idea of taking a month or two "vacation" to South America. I'd love to do the same in Europe and Asia, but the time difference may make morning stand-ups a bit difficult.

Enjoy your travels and adventures :D
