Windows/Portals/fortifications

I was thinking as a group of raiders was standing on one side of my wall...what if I could construct windows that prevent movement through the wall but allows sight and ranged weapon fire to be exchanged? 

Just to note: The designs I see for the windows is for survival and protection, not french windows or wide open windows to enjoy the view and let the air in the house. They are secure, heavily built and designed to prevent intruders from just 'popping the latch' and climbing through. Could also think of them as fortifications like in Dwarf Fortress if it let's the idea work better for you.

Some idea points that I had:

+ Boosts happiness if viewing outside and is a communal area.

+ Able to shoot out through the window (and able to be shot at through it too)

+ Allow light into the roofed room depending on facing and time of day (coding seems to be in place with how the shadows/light moves via time of day, may need coding to keep roofed area as inside and not liable to rain/electrical mishaps)

- As said above, shooting through it yourself means you can be shot though it too

- Coding issues may crop up if dynamic day/night lighting

- low HP that would make it an easy access point when it takes damage (it could be a power field portal rather than a glass one or even just metal mesh)


Ideas for window/portal composition:

Basic: Wooden. Just needs wood to make, lowest HP. Think of it like old English shutters with some glass.

Modern: Metal. Needs metal to make. Medium HP. More like windows of today or metal reinforced bars (prison) or whatever you wish.

Advanced: Metal + Power drain. High HP. It's a power field..what more do you expect? Think of it like a force field  that for some reason allows hyper velocity projectiles through, but not slow moving people to walk through. If power is not supplies/supply is cut it counts as an empty space and does not hinder movement though it (though interesting interactions could happen should it be powered on when someone is standing there) Must be build next to at least 1 metal wall for projectors (bit of RP pretty much)

End one may be a bit too complex to code but would be fun to have as a prison viewing wall if you ignore the last pint about next to a metal wall.

I think that windows could make pillboxes an interesting thing to make that can have the security that sandbagging does not, you simply cannot just climb through a window that's built to defend ala fortifications like arrow slits in castle walls of old.

Hope you liked some of this, any thoughts on it would be good.

Well i got fences that work like that in my clutter mod and thers also embrasures mod that have walls like you described, and thers also glasswork 2 that adds windows but i didnt play with that mod so i can say what they do :P

In all of this mods above i can safely assumed that this are basicly modified sandbags, retextured and without ability to pass thrugh them.  Embrasures walls also give max def bonus so its like your colonist would hide behid the wall.

And they all tend to have that bad thing that they let light thrugh. Keep in mind that lit objects are easier to hit, so if your guys are keept in a dark pile box, raiders will have bigger problems to hit your colonists.

Happinest boost is the hardest i think, since the envoirmental beauty its uses stacks preety slowly so even with highest beauty bonus you can apply via xml, your colonist would need to stay in that area for good few seconds, which is rearly the case.
All i do is clutter all around.

Good 'Ol embrasures mod, Mix it with that one that adds blast doors and steel walls and you have a fortress.

Something similiar to that of the embrasures or fortifications is a fairly popular topic. :)
