I bought & downloaded game for my son, unpacked it, and it says that RimWorld data should be next to the executable. so I pulled those two things out and put them next to each other on the desktop... I get a black, blank screen, and a crash report...  :(
How do I get it to work????
we have Windows 8.1
thx

You have to extract everything from the zip file. My guess is, that you didn't extract the mod folder? Unfortunately in there is the Core mod, which essentially includes all the necessary data to run the game. :)
Also, there is a problem with non-English characters in path names. Therefore it is better to extract everything in a simple folder like c:/RimWorld and just pull a shortcut from the exe-file to the desktop.

I started over - extracted everything to a new folder. clicked on RimWorld496Win... it goes to a black screen, with a white triangle that I can move with the mouse.
Version: 0.5.496 rev18731
Windows 8.1

no longer getting an error message, but... I think the game is supposed to be more than just a black screen... frustrated.

I wonder if RimWorld conflicts with something else we have installed, or if it just doesn't work on 8.1????
I was going to try having 8.1 start it as something that runs on an earlier version, but since the installation doesn't have a startup file... don't know how to do that???????????

8.1 Is known to be 'iffy' with programs.
Do you think you could upload the crash report? It might help determine why it's doing it.

The 'startup file' you're looking for is the EXE file itself. Though now that I look at your post, Rimworld496Win is Alpha 5, IIRC. The game is now on Alpha 6, so it should be Rimworld532Win. Alpha 7 is coming soon, so you may want to wait a week or two. You can always download the latest version from the link you received in the confirmation email (that link always has the latest version).

The game doesn't have an installer, so to 'uninstall' it, just remove the entire folder. Or you can extract the new version to another folder and run that.
I like how this game can result in quotes that would be quite unnerving when said in public, out of context. - Myself

The dubious quotes list is now public. See it here

A week or two is a long time, Q. Plus the change log isn't showing the 'near completion' look. (where it's all bugfixes and whatnot.)  Ludeon is still adding things, So it might be a while off.

Also. After re-reading the OP, I've noticed that JustAMom says..

I'm fairly sure the files still need to be in a directory, Pulling the data from where they were kept to put them next to the executable might be the cause.

I'm hoping the OP has not left the conversation in frustration. :(
Generally I put the Rar file on my desktop, then right click and select Extract Here.
Once that is done I can just open the game folder Right click on the Exe.File and select Send to Desktop. Now I have a Shortcut I can use to open the game. There is really no need to move around folders and such. Hope this helps. :)

Although I note your running Win 8, I have very little knowledge on that matter. :-\

Coen, I agree that a week or two is quite long to wait for A7, but I bet it's shorter than having to wait for Microsoft to fix Windows 8 :D
