Why not just make the event type optional, as per my suggestion here?

I think people actually want these events to be irrelevant and have no effect on the game.

That's my concern also. Tynan has mentioned he would like to avoid degenerate strategies, which I think a simple gas mask/hazmat suit would become. Of course, it is possible to implement a very complex/balanced counter, but generally they has been left to modders, rather than vanilla.

Again, I'm very pleased with the new long term events and want to see more. My suggestion above was an attempt to find a solution that doesn't neuter the bite of current events...

If Gas mask wear down really fast (as the filter clog) this would nicely avoid degenerate strategy.
Only problem is Rimworld don't have easy mechanic to get rid of consumable 'clothes'.

Like the following :
- Make Gas Mask (cotton+medicinal herb)
- Once the Gas Mask wear down you drop it in a special stockpile that you incinerate.
So (1) It require costly material (2) It doesn't last forever (3) Mood Debuff

Right now we don't really have incentive to use Gas Mask, but if the Fallout was shorter and drop-pod happened (or Crashed ship), it would make a big difference (sending a combat team with gas-mask and all).
