I'm in an icesheet flat map with barely any steel present on the map. Im in this predicament because I wasnt aware that I choose a flat map instead of a mountainous.  Any ways I can get my hands on some steel?

Early game mostly traders. Mid game you can smelt steel from weapons you get from raiders. Later you build deep drills - when you get to them steel will not be much of a problem.

You can make a mining camp - you do that either with using mod for camping https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=29054.0 or you change max number of colonies to 2 in setting and make a second base(I would advise using camping mod)

Or you can just form a caravan and abandon your colony and go to nearest place which has mountains and start there.

Build a stonecutter's table immediately, to save steel and build out of stone. I recommend putting a sunlamp over the biggest patch of gravel and planting potatoes. Later you can patch the holes in gravel with hydroponic tables. Save wood for solar flares.

Deconstruct ship chunks with a good constructor to get more steel.

I played a flat ice sheet very recently. It's possible as long as you don't use too much steel too early. You should research machining table because you're likely to get many mechanoid raids, when it's too cold for humans or manhunters. But hey, extra steel!

Save power. Turn off sunlamp at night. Connect living quarters with vents so you don't pay too much for heating bills. That way you don't have to build too many wind turbines.

Vents are pretty expensive, at 35 steel apiece.  I usually use open doors instead.
Mental break: playing RimWorld

Final straw was: Overdue projects.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think that terrain affects the type or amount of minable resources on the map - except stone. Flat maps just make everything else more visible.

nah mountains contain 2-3 times more steel/plasteel if you mine everything but most of it is hidden.

For sunlamp i go for an isolated circuit with 2-3 solars. That way you dont have to turn off sunlamp
