You're looking at it in black and white. There's the point about the length of a death penalty putting it in a different league to that of a food or table related debuff, making it effectively accurate for gameplay without Tynan needing to make multiple emotion variations. And then there's the point stating that Tynan has probably already toned down the penalties of losing a loved one in the face of people who want it all to be easy street (not referring to you here).

So maybe he's simply worked it all out so that, even if it's not quite right, the system works to keep every area of daily life in Rimworld an area you'd want to be KEENLY on top of.

Also it's a game and the traits are very jokey. Gourmet is simply meant to exaggerate the penalties for food-related thoughts.
