Bill > Make Kibble - Always > Use only Human meat and Haygrass.

Animals fed forever.
The downside of that is the "butchered humanlike" debuf which sucks a little.
My favorite option is to set up an insect farm and use Insect meat and Haygrass for Kibble.

Just have 2-3 hives in a decently small room and install a few heaters. Pump it up to about 100°C and the spawned insects die of heatstroke but before they die they can usually tend to the hives so they wont expire. Once all insects are downed/dead go in and remove all corpses and jelly and replace mined walls with new ones so the next generation of insects cant escape.
Tips: use double walls so the insects dont mine themselves out of the enclosure and forbid the door so no colonist randomly walks in.

Regarding animal farming:
I love dogs since they dont produce filth. Make an animal area over your meals, beer and other stuff they shouldnt eat and then invert it (in the manage areas tab). Dogs nuzzle your colonist, are good haulers and soak up a lot of damage if released. Dogs are also my Doomsday missle and Tripple rocketlauncher defense since the raiders usually target the first enemy and fire at them. A few dead dogs are easily worth unwounded colonists.

Chickens are also quite good. Have 2 roosters and put them in a extra animal area and you wont have to worry about your chicken population exploding. Want some new chickens? Put the roosters back into the chicken area.
I also like cows because they give milk which is a good non-vegetarian nutrition source. Muffalos are alright since they produce milk way slower but give wool and can carry shit for your caravan.

Farming is most viable in a biodome where you got grass growing everywhere but on Ice Sheet and in the desert you might want to trimm down your animal population and maybe restrict it to dogs and pigs since they can just eat the raider corpses but you will also feed them other hard grown plants which is a drain on power, resources and worktime.

However: Regardless how viable meat farming is in generall. Even if it is less effective than growing plants (and it is), meat is necessary for fine and lavish meals. So, if you dont have a good meat sources walking around outside or your demand increases with your growing colony you will eventually have to turn to farming your own if you want that sweet +5 or +10 meal mood bonus.

That is a fascinating idea. I will have to try this.
