Anything that would help me get started, also tips on how to keep within the general style of rimworld as well. All help is appreciated.

Ok... First, try to keep things simple, don't add many details, i recomment using the 64x64 size (vanilla size) for weapons and items, use 128x128 for pawns, also, once you finished your texture, give it black borders, just like vanilla textures, it really makes it look great. Don't forget using a transparent background! :D

I recommend using GIMP for making textures, its free and it has a simple interface. Once you finished your texture, save it as .png to save the transparency, otherwise you'll end up with a white box around your texture  :P

If you don't really have much experience drawing on a computer, i say you make a few simple weapon sprites, and then go for more complex stuff, such as pawns, don't just rush into making a really complex sprite for a building if you don't know what you're doing  ;)

I added an example rifle, you can use it if you want :D

Thanks, yea I am using Gimp. I've already made a simple helmet texture http://i.imgur.com/3Ls7TnQ.png

Something that has been troublesome for me, is emulating the shading style of other items. I have absolutely no experience shading, or texturing for that matter, but I want to try. I like that on say, the vanilla power helmet, the shading is nice and symetrical, it almost looks like a pattern, not likes its not done by hand, how I did the rough shading on that image.

You can use the dodge/burn tool for that i think, then mirror half of the helmet and paste it on the other side... I haven't tested this though, but it should in theory work.

The burn doesn't like the white, it doesn't have any effect, but I am probably doing something wrong

I forgot to tell you, you have to go to tool options, and in the "Range" options, mark "Highlights", that should work.

I've found a way that I like.

I make a line near where I want the shade to be darkest, and use the blur/smudge tool to drag the color down. Makes a nice and natural shade.

Not exactly applicable to the Rim-style art, but there are several good tutorials which might be useful:
