slave traders delivering unusable colonists

When I purchase new colonists from the slave traders with "other things" (e.g. metal or other unusables-I like to sell surplus guns) the first of the "other things" will land on my beacon, destroying it and scattering everything across the map, except for the slaves. The slaves land either off the map or into undiscovered mountainous terrain (when I click on their names in the Overview that's where I'm taken), in both instances becoming unusable. They show up in the Overview until they mentally-break and leave the colony. I've had this happen on three different games now where I sell as many guns as I can, while buying up everything they are selling, and then purchase two slaves.
