The Ice Shelf Challenge

Had no seriouse trouble doing iceshelf with Randy Random@Challenge. But to be fair i handpicked a good location in the mountains with one big chunk mountain for a huge base.

However this Biome is clearly unforgivingly hostile!
I found Visitor groups in most cases lose one member, because moving 1/2 - 2/3 over the map to my base entry and back will give even the toughest toon seriouse Hypothermia (freezings). Weak or worse, slow movers, are simply doomed.

It helps allot to choose your first 3 toons as good miners besides the other usual preferences to make shure atleast 1 of the 3 can cover Research, Cooking, Growing, Manufacturing and Medicine. That is because while mining my first cave i happened to dig right into a Compacted Plasteel vein (stat:10000 (Compare Sandstone 400)), so having 3 Miners you can save lots of preciouse time when exposed to -50 C.
I have not encountered any other Animals then Warg packs who seem to invade frequently. These Wargs are very fast, vicous and start hunting as soon as they spawn as pack, so dont wait with digging in and collecting what you need to get everything started as Caveman-Team!

If you can do an ice sheet map without ever tasting the Long Pig you should be pretty proud, that is extremely hard even with a custom Prepare Carefully start (unless you do something silly and take hundreds of meals).

The real challenge is not so much in game difficulty but in the harshness of the environment itself, just avoiding starvation and freezing to death is a huge step up in difficulty from pretty much all the other biomes regardless of difficulty.

ps: the seed "bananas" results in a nice large cluster of very cold tiles, some of which go down to -80 and lower in midwinter

Ice Shelf with randy random and then extreme! Now that's hard! I almost died, lucky a zombie raid happened...

For flu, try a cock. If that doesn't work, try boobmilk. Nice.

I've found if you just want to do an Ice sheet for fun. There are a few mods that can make it much easier, and don't forget the Socks!

Edb Prepare Carefully
Temperature Control
Apparello
Norbals

These mods will give you mainly what you need, and well this is optional... but become a Cannibal. Because you know... when you are a cannibal, every raid except mechanoid is a food delivery.
i want a mod to make the winter harsher on the ice sheets, i cant begin to tell you how many worlds i go through looking for a stupidly cold ice sheet. i am talking -100f in winter and like -50f in summer  i want freezing tems that if you step out side your done with a capital D

I'm pretty sure my current seed has a map with -100f winters and -50f summers, very close to what you said. That's where I plan on doing my ice sheet challenge. I can't confirm tonight, but I'll try to double-check tomorrow. I'll share the seed if it does indeed get that cold. :)

Also, try doing this without Apparello, just with vanilla cold weather clothing.

If you use the seed "Twitch" on max world size(the whole world) theres a landing site that says it hits -90F but in reality hits about -113F in winter, I think its around -45 - -55f in the summer.
Have Fun  ;D ;D

People always talk about their succesfull/unsuccesfull colony on a biome, but then always forget to mention which storyteller and difficulty they were playing it. That makes an imense difference.

Sorry about that, I was playing Randy Random on the normal difficulty setting, the one that says, "The way Rimworld is meant to be played."

The temperatures shown on the map are averages. It can get colder or hotter than the averages shown.

Well, I was mostly right. Use the seed "jal90" at map size 250x188. Switch to temperature view. At the very top, look at the furthest right patch of white. Click through the whitest cells that form a line at the edge of the map. One of the cells should have an average January temperature of -110.0F and an average July temperature of -14.3F.

It's an icesheet biome. Elevation is 3139m. The terrain is mountainous. The rainfall is 64mm. The stone types are sandstone and granite.

It's the coldest cell that I recall finding to date.

Nice, going to try this.

Incidentally if you are playing with the Zombie Apocalypse mod and want your zombies to be a serious threat instead of a bunch of free food and leather, Ninefinger explains how to modify the zombie race def to make them much more resistant to cold, in this post:

Does anyone noticed that even with temperatures above 20+ Celsius the Ice doesn't melt !?

Is that a known bug ?  :-\

Axelios

I think it's just that the ice is assumed to be too damn thick to really melt. Like 1000m+
