hexagon tiles

Like for most wargames to be based on hexagon (instead of square) tiles would be a huge improvement.

Galileus

I actually feel the same way :) But this is a design idea, and changing it now would require to roll back pretty much everything and write it from scrap. Not likely, to say at least. A shame!

Stickle

Unlikely for the reasons Galileus cited... And I'm glad it's squares! Right now most of the focus of Rimworld is surviving raiders, but the long-term goal is for there to be many more challenges than the combat. And I think combat is the only thing that might actually benefit from a hex grid; whereas building is way better with squares.

hexagon tiles don't really work with wall by wall building. not to mention how mineing would suffer.

Could only constructing be based in hexes? Also, mining wouldn't suffer. If anything, it would be improved; can strike four spots at once instead of just three. This would also make the suggested "smooth out rock walls" command make more sense.

Splitting it between construction and mining is out of the question. And it's true - construction in hexes is not ideal. It would be on octas, but octas... well, there is this funny thing with octas, that they are quads in disguise ;)

What i think is that we can have a screen like Civ's Stragic veiw, thats based ish on hexes, All in favor, i dont know, :l

I would only ask what would be better if game would be constructed around hexacons? Only thing in get in my mind is angled walls, buildings, etc. Neat, but not really worth of time it needs for reprogramming. Being able to angle farms would be usefull sometimes.

Constructing in hexes sucks, honestly, because you can't make a square building.

And people like to build square buildings.

mining would definitely suffer. it would be hard to accurately select large areas to mine, also it would me more complex placement for ore, which would make it harder to find and harder to mine cause you'd have to keep selecting the new peaces that appear instead of simply ming out a square.

There is at least one building that in real life is based on hex: a prison, because you can control more people with the guard tower on the center.

Some prisons, not all of them. The conditions that apply to civil prisons don't apply here. We don't need to "control" the inmates at all, because everybody who isn't literally useless has a gun, and if they attempt to escape, they will be shot dead. So our prisons tend to be more like bunkhouses.

Also, in real life, you don't build by "tiles," you build by engineering. Hexagon-based tile construction would enable one type of building to work somewhat smoother, but completely wreck construction of all the others.

I think it would be more effective if you could build walls diagonal, so that the game would create a connected wall, for the people who like hexagonal bases, but I don't see how the current combat system would benefit from hexagon tiles.
