Animal Self tames-too frequent?

In my one game of A12 so far I'm getting a lot of self taming animals.

My colonies date is 11/10/5500, and so far several squirrels, a Ewe and a hare have self tamed. The Squirrels all started breeding and now I feel like I've found the Rimworld equivalent of Tribbles.
Equally most of these animals are essentially useless (what good is this horde of squirrels? I can't release them).

And lets not talk about the flock of Hens that arrived and self tamed, and their breeding habits My hen collection is about three pages long.

So maybe the frequency that event drops with is a bit too common? To my mind an animal self taming should be pretty rare.

Slaughter em, make a squirrel armchair, and teach them a lesson.
Selling broken colonist souls for two thousand gold. Accepting cash or credit.

I think you've just been lucky. I'm a year in with my most recent colony and had only one animal self-tame.

I'm at Dec 8 5501 and have had two self-taming events (1 hare, 1 squirrel) and two groups of animals join (2 alpaca, 3 alpaca).

I partially agree. This event can be a bit more rare, but not much.

Main issue IMO is that you do not have option to refuse those animals (Go away, lousy squirrel! Shoo!). Or even drive them away into the wild, when they are tamed.
Pain, agony and mechanoids.

Why would you refuse them? If you don't want the upkeep think of it as some danger-free hunting and slaughter them.

Because this way my game will have more of that story rich stuff?

Here is a little quote:
QuoteWe had to throw rocks. I told her to run, to go be free, that I didn't want her anymore. There were other wolves for her to play with, we heard them howling, and Jory said the woods were full of game, so she'd have deer to hunt. Only she kept following and finally we had to throw rocks. I hit her twice. She whined and looked at me and I felt so 'shamed, but it was right, wasn't it? The queen would have killed her.
Pain, agony and mechanoids.

I believe self-taming is a bit too common. In my second year I already have a squirrel, a mufallo and an elk. In another colony I got an elephant before the first winter, and two hares.

picollo

Why would you refuse self tamed animals? We can discuss later, when you get 3 boomalopas, and 2 more boomrats self tamed.

skullywag

just wait for that Thrumbo to self tame....

edit - actually they wouldnt as they dont spawn wild....booo
Skullywag modded to death.
I'd never met an iterator I liked....until Zhentar saved me.
Why Unity5, WHY do you forsake me?

mumblemumble

I had a rhino self tame before i built anything. That was... Interesting.
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.

Tynan

Ok, I'll reduce the frequency. Thanks.

Fire your Disney princess!

I have introduced her to the pirate merchants. They're stand-up folk, those boys.

I've seen a bulk trader carry several Thrumbos for sale! So much for "rare Thrumbo"!

Tynan, it may sound backwards but I think chance of self-taming shouldn't be related to animal's wildness. That way the event lets players try out animals they wouldn't normally get, like an elk (much faster milk generation than mufallo). An elephant costs 1000, and I got to play with one for free.
