Like i have tons of scars IRL as i am sure all of you do aswell, they do not cause pain. So why do they cause pain? I feel melee would be buffed if scars didnt give pain debuff and i mean it is not like that will make melee OP its already quite crap.

Because they do...  especially from Scars from poorly healed injuries. Internal scars are the worst.  Having that tough tissue impeding the proper movement of an organ or muscle.  The feeling of it digging in every time you move.

While I've never been stabbed or shot before, I do think those type of scars are a bit different than the scrapes we usually get.

Meanwhile most my colonists have scratch scars that are ooo so painful

I would imagine gun and stab scars would continue to cause pain, and burn scaring much so, but things like cuts or scratches shouldn't cause pain in the long run. Well unless they are deep enough. Maybe in an update or if anyone would make a mod to exclude minor damage from causing painful scars.

Improperly treated (as in not stapled/closed together to heal) scars from significant injuries (deep slashes/stabs/gashes) is very painful in real life.

the "gap", even if healed, can cause sensations of tearing.

But I will assume most of you never had that.

but imagine, the intensity of the damage: well, a scratch might cause 3 dmg, but each limb is like 30 hp :P

imagine if your injuries causes you to lose/mangles 10% of your arms :D
the resulting scar would be a pain! *pun*

A "scratch" from, like an elephant tusk? Yeah. Ask anybody who's ever been mauled by a dog if the scars hurt.

As somebody who has been mauled in the face by dog, including deep soft tissue damage inside my mouth that couldn't be stitched at all, the scars don't hurt at all.

My experience with scars is the really bad ones, like where you impale your foot with a nail, or get second degree burns all up your arm, just get a little numb. Though I must admit I've never been shot, and the only time I've been sliced open with a knife was during surgery.

My experience is similar, 2nd and 3rd degree scrape injuries that literally skinned (as in taxidermy) my face - bicycle, went over the handlebars onto asphalt. My beard still doesn't grow right but there's no pain. Now, I know an amputee who can vouch for phantom limb pain being a thing... which funny enough is *not* a thing our Rimworld multiple amputees get.

I'm no expert though and based on some people's comments here I'm curious if anybody has a good reference on actual *scars* that cause pain. I think Rimworld is the first place I've seen it suggested that they can.

I like how they saw the naked guy with no food and said, "what he needs is an SMG."

Most external scars won't cause pain, unless they're so tight/massive they restrict movement in some way, as keloid scars can, for good example.  Internal scars, on the other hand, nearly always cause at least some pain in the future, from my experience.
Thanks, belgord!

I have a relatively tiny knife wound from over a decade ago and it still hurts sometimes. Can't imagine going though what my pawns go through haha.
Losing is fun!

Bear in mind that the scars shown in game reduce the total damage the body part can endure, sometimes significantly. What they represent is not dark/raised lines where some minor injury occurred, but serious improperly healed wounds, things like bones that didn't set straight or significant amounts of missing or nonfunctional muscle tissue. Think Dr. House.

Travinsky

I think ultimately its just a game mechanic to punish you for not healing someone right away or have good medicine around or a skilled doctor. I have no idea if deep scars from stabs or gunshots hurt, I only have a couple and they're all on the surface. There has to be a penalty for not being completely prepared, its easy enough during end-game to have loads of good medicine and skilled doctors around, and I think it enriches the pawns a little bit. My original colonists always have loads more scars than the new arrivals and I quite like the fact that is looks like they've been through hell.

If you have a better alternative than scars by all means post it, but as is its just one of things in games where we have to suspend our disbelief.

Bozobub

I agree, but would word it differently:  There's only so fine-grained any particular part of the simulation needs to be :P.  If the game was too close to real life, frankly, it wouldn't likely be much fun; your pawns likely wouldn't even survive reentry, FFS.
Thanks, belgord!

Broke my collar bone when I was 13, had to have surgery and a pin put in, it was later removed, but almost 30 years later I still get discomfort from the surgical scar.
