Stone Fireplace

The campfire is neat, but not really an "indoor" thing.

I suggest a stone fireplace.
50 stone blocks, 20 wood, 10 steel.
Can only be built under a roof, but not overhead mountain.
Burns wood at a slower rate than the campfire, but you can't cook there.
Provides heat, serves as a gathering spot, and provides a slight joy and beauty bonus when around it.
Can be "switched off" when the weather is warm.
Additionally, it would be cool to see a smoke trail from wherever it's placed.
Nothing says "Home Security" like 50 turrets

Why wouldn't you be able to cook in the fireplace? That's one of the main things they were historically used for.

I agree, should allow cooking : but otherwise having a hard version of a campfire which is more efficient, permanent would be rather nice.
Why to people worry about following their heart? Its lodged in your chest, you won't accidentally leave it behind.

Its bad because reasons, and if you don't know the reasons, you are horrible. You cannot ask what the reasons are or else you doubt it. But the reasons are irrefutable. Logic.

Because that would negate the use of the fueled stove.

No it wouldn't.  If the fireplace is just an indoor campfire, it would only allow the creation of simple meals and pemmican.  Just like the campfire, you'd need the stove to make the better meals.  Personally, I'd have the fireplace be able to do one better than the campfire, and allow for fine meals as well, leaving lavish meals to the stovetops.

It would more be a multi-functional device. The stove can be turned off and on, for one, I imagine a fireplace would burn till its out.

I agree that the jump from neolithic tech to industrial tech is a bit jarring, but this goes beyond heating or cooking - Rimworld lore claims that some planets exist in a medieval state, there are loads of "medieval" backgrounds yet medieval tech of any kind is suspiciously absent from the game. You go straight from ancient/classical technology into late industrial (electricity), skipping a huge chunk of human history and development.

I hope there are plans to add more mid-level technology at some point - it feels very odd to me that tribals can go from living like cavemen to understanding electricity without learning anything about coal, steam or earlier power sources first.
