1.) Circumstance: After embarking, during map generation with Permadeath enabled.

2.) What happened: The game returns to the main menu with error: "Exception from asynchronous event: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
at Verse.RulePackDef.get_RulesImmediate..." (continues to list error)

3.) What you expected: The map to load.

4.) Steps to take: Enable Permadeath option and embark on a tile on the planet to generate the map.

5.) Savegame: N/A

Had a failed map load for Unstable 18. I have attached the log. I went ahead and removed my IP and PC name. The log also includes mapping errors for the F5 key.

The F5 bug happened while the game was starting up so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't already reported. Seed for map was "Dwarf Fortress", 100% map, no changes to climate, at coordinates 8.78S 177.66W, at the 400x400 map size. In addition I had backed out from the Create Characters menu to the world map once before going back to the menu and starting the game. Then the failed load happened after the associated errors were displayed, which start at "Failed to find all necessary river flow data". I have replicated the bug on my end.

EDIT: Was on Permadeath mode and failed to mention it. Turns out it's the reason for the bug. See the next post.

That sounds a lot like the bug I just posted. I'll go ahead and test if turning off Permadeath on my end fixes my failed map load.

EDIT: Can confirm that Permadeath is the main culprit. I'll be updating my report.

After some additional testing, I can confirm that my bug is tied with the bug in https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=36212.msg37286. The main issue is the Permadeath mode, which from what I understand in the log, is not referenced properly.

I do not know if it's a bug or not, but when I generate a map and start the game, I'm jumping out * an error when generating a map *
I do not have any mods on, nothing.

That's permadeath, just play without it for now

secteur

After choosing Rich Explorer, Permadeath (any level, any storyteller),
world is generated successfully,
character can be selected
but Generate map _fails_

Successfully used Permadeath with "Lost tribe"
Successfully started Rich Explorer map without Permadeath

As soon as I clicked 'start' after character selection the game said that it encountered an error when generating the map.

Tried with 3 map sizes with same result.

Log attached

EDIT: Might be the same error others are getting when trying to start a game with permadeath on.

@ All - Thank you all for reporting the issue with generating a world with permadeath on. (@secteur - Thanks as well for narrowing it down further). Since all these reports appear to be about the same issue I have merged them into a single thread.

@ Demagogue Dimension - The F5 shortcut conflict is a known issue and, I think, it should only appear once when first loading A18. Here's the Mantis report about this: https://ludeon.com/mantis/view.php?id=3115 . Although if it happens every time you start A18 then please create a new bug thread for it (as this one is for the Permadeath issue).

Thank you dude, I really thought it was my only one!

error also occurs with crashlanded scenario, map gen error when permadeath on, map generates when permadeath off.

Thanks for the extra info. I've amended the thread title accordingly.

Edit - Not sure what scenarios this affects so edited the title to a less specific one :)

Looks like I goofed somewhere, disregard (apparently steam always resets the version download to the default).

So I just downloaded the unstable A18 build. Decided I want to start a new permadeath colony on Cassandra/Rough. Went through world generation, selected my site, and chose my pawns. Begin to generate my map, and then the debug log pops up and I get this:

I've recreated it several times, as long as permadeath is selected I still get this message. I've attached the output log. Please let me know if there's anything else I should include.

I downloaded the unstable build. Generated a 100% map, picked a good spot, and got into pawn creation. After accepting my characters, immediately get a message saying there was an error while generating the map. Error also happens on 30% world, different terrains, etc.

From the hundreds of hours I've played before, it usually spends a second loading and then goes into the crashland sequence. This is what I expected, but obviously couldn't get that far.

Not sure how to make it happen on another machine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice, and it still fails the same way. I can't submit a save file because I haven't gotten far enough to get one, but I can submit the logs.

I hope to be able to tryout A18 soon. Thanks
