Tynan has said that it will come out on Steam eventually.

So far as I understand, he doesn't have it there yet because Steam doesn't support multiple versions. As long as the game is in alpha, it'll have whole concepts added and even sometimes removed every version.

The size of the changes mean that player's save files won't be compatible between versions. If it was on Steam you'd be forced to upgrade to the newest version by the system, so every time a new alpha would come out you would have to start a new colony and would not be able to finish your old games even if you wanted to.

So he's keeping it off Steam for the time being. When new versions come out people can continue to use the old ones as long as they wish, and upgrade to the new versions at their leisure.

We can even keep multiple versions active and see the difference between, say, alpha 1 and alpha 5 to see how far the game's come.  :)

Edit: I found the thread where Tynan (the developer) talked about it. You can find it here: http://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=4750.0
