Item Stuff Coloration

I've noticed in many mod tutorials where new textures are created, there will be a red portion of the texture that functions as a way for the game to recognize where material colors can be used. Think of melee weapon retexture mods, where the handle is always brown like wood, but the metal portions take on the color of the material that the item is made from. How do I implement this feature into textures I make, specifically in GIMP?
