Oh, it works!  In fact, many gamers (including myself) feel that RimWorld is already more complete, bug-free, and of better quality than many "finished" games from big companies.  :D

Check out some YouTube Let's Plays, or look at the Stories or Videos forums here to get a good feel for the game.

This issue has been brought up before, and the developer (Tynan) has decided not to create any demos.  The game can be bought now for $30, which gives you the current Alpha, all future Alpha's, and the final release.  You could wait until the final release and it'll still be $30.  If you're at all interested, I say buy now.  You lose nothing, and you get to be a part of it sooner - and maybe even a part of its development.  Tynan regularly reads the forums and takes feedback from those of us who have purchased the game.  Then there's the HUGE capability the game has for modding, and the huge number of mods that already exist.  For me, it was (and is!) totally worth the $30 investment I made.

EDIT - Here's a link to the most relevant time someone asked for a demo:

This game works, and it works well.  Buying early releases is always a gamble but this game is definitely worth the money if you like this type of game.  The game is updated often and there is a running change log so you can see how much work and how often the game is worked on.   https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_rCdGYp3nbSUXFG4Ky96RZW1cJGt9g_6ANZZPOHyNsg/pub) There is no worry about this game being abandoned which is always my biggest fear when buying into early access.  As said before the developer is very active and listens to the community.  There has been so much care and effort put into this game and you won't regret getting it.
