So I bought RimWorld a couple weeks ago and I quite enjoy it. This is probably the third or fourth colony I've created so far, with the first few being pure experimentation.

2014-10-12-13-48.png

The building at the top is the housing building. Left of it (purple zone) is the potato field. South of that (red zone) is the stockpile.

East of that is the dining area, with a stockpile for cooked meals (left building) and the stonecutting/tailoring area (right/centre building, haven't yet built the actual tailoring bench). The big "dome" to the right of that is the trading zone, and the attached building to it is the comms centre and research bench.

The left-most building is the cooking area and nutrient paste dispenser, with food stockpile. Then right of it and south the path is the medical centre, with a stockpile for medicine and body parts. Right of that is the prison. The yellow-ish zone between the prison/trading area/comms centre/stonecutting area is the dumping stockpile. (Only temporary, moving it soon.)

The southmost building is the indoor farm. Right now only the potato hydroponics area is done, as I need more metal to finish the strawberry hydroponics area.

Down the path to the right are the two Geothermal Generators, each inside a small building. (Still building up significant defenses to protect all of this.)

There are a couple turrets around the base, but I have it set on Casual mode so it's pretty small when things attack.

So far I've not had any major catastrophes with this colony.

I'm still finishing the hydroponics building, but I think I'm going to run it on a separate electricity circuit, and throw some solar generators outside of it and run it off those and a bunch of batteries. That area is not nearly as important as the other buildings. (I.e. Medical.) Also working on replacing the items in the prison with stone/stone block stuff, to strengthen it.

Edit: I've finished the prison, at least for now. It's quite small but I really don't care about my prisoners.

Hi All,

Some awesome looking colonies in this thread, I have been inspired!

Here is my humble first attempt at a Colony

I think I might start again after seeing some of the clever ideas in this thread!

Don't you know the risk of using all those batteries? :P

Update: I finished Hydroponics room 2 and added Hydroponics room 3 to the Hydroponics centre, and of course as soon as I start growing the cotton a solar flare.

Thanks,
EBrown

Somewhat risky having a tonne of batteries in a wooden shed LOL.  I've had them blow up a few times but I just don't see any other way to keep a large colony powered!  Without enough batteries to last 2 days without the sun, your colony goes downhill really quickly! Especially if an eclipse happens to end just as the sun goes down. Im going to try independently powering my different areas of my colony this time, instead of one huge power map.

My best colony to date and perhaps my second best starting position. The only better one I had was two steam geysers right on the mountain wall within 30 squares of each other. That one was awesome. This is my first time building a space ship and holy cow is that a lot of resources. I'm inordinately pleased by my palatial prison. Unfortunately the walled garden is not enough to clear out cabin fever.

Hi guys, this I guess is my first post!  :)
My colony here is called Verdai, currently consisting of over fifty colonists with a little over four years on the clock. Its a Randy Random colony on Normal Challenge, and is my third attempt at the game, which I feel went rather well.
At the moment, a crashed ship part has decided to drop on my doorstep, so fun times!

This is an overview of my colony, some parts aren't visible as they didn't fit on screen.

This is Northern Verdai, which contains the barracks, a housing district and some undeveloped land. This area will be reconstructed soon, as I'm currently struggling with homelessness, due in part to the high influx of colonists I currently recieve.

This is Southern Verdai, where the main housing district, the prison and what used to be the R&D lab (the metal paved room in the South right against the wall).

This is a much more in depth look at my prison - I'm not very concerned with prisoner comfort at the moment, as you can see (I have about ten wardens working with these prisoners trying to recruit them (even the impossible ones), which can give them upto +99 mood. Through this, they'll never break, even with serious cabin fever, and very cramped enviroments).

This is currently the only devloped area outside of Verdai's walls - it contains a large power plant, a farm (soon to be multiple) and a central restaraunt for feeding the hungry.

And finally my stats.

Hope you like it!

Have you tried finding a geyser nearby? They are awesome with consistent power and a lot of it.

Edit: I left my stuff run on autopilot for a while and oh man...so much food. Like damnnnnnn...so much food. I'm looking at 5007 of potatoes and berries right now...just wow. I have no idea what to do with all this food. Sell it maybe? Keep it? I'll have to build a huger food storage area.

Thanks,

Base attempt two. this one is so far raider impenetrable

Having a food storage zone directly where the cook stands speeds up food production by about 500%! (he does not need to move at all to get ingredients and cook and place the cooked food)

This is my "killbox" and it turned out to be incredibly effective (though a little expensive in metal)

This is just after a fight, so 2 turrets are missing from the middle.  But the idea is that in order for a raider to shoot at the turret, they need to enter the box.  The sandbags inside give them a place to take cover, which stops them exiting the killbox.   The turrets in this configuration just nail people and very quickly. However larger groups stupidly attack and destroy the turrets, even though 10-15 of their allies are within range of the explosion that's coming.  So combined with the turret fire, sniper fire inside and the exploding turrets, only one or two melee raiders ever make it inside, and are quickly dispatched by my waiting colonists before they an do anything.

Here's my colony, Salvation. It is day 1123, I have 63 Colonists, 9 Prisoners. I've been doing several renovations over the last little while, but there is still work to be done. I haven't figured out a way to optimize food delivery to my prison; I end up with a dent in my surplus meals any time I have a great number of prisoners.

Gonorejus

The largest base that I have ever mined out. Got very lucky with 3 geothermals under the "Overhead mountain roof", so they're nice and safe from any pirates dropping down on them in drop pods.

Welcome to Borderlands!

after 4 years in development hopefully it will have been worth the weight  ;)

So I just recently restarted an A8 colony, and so far it's gone pretty well. Been having no real issues with it, except that it's quite well exposed, and easy to attack. There's a mountain south of it I think I will move into, now that I have an adequate number of people to help with the move. (7)

The freezer is set to -9C, which allows me to stockpile food for raids.

All the bodies in the grave are raiders except two of them, who were bystanders that were killed. Need to setup a crematorium to get rid of them.

Vanilla colony of 15

three guys hiding in the back are melee and will charge in later on

While not in combat

ManWithNoName

This is my current base. Im actually surprised its still going ive had a few mech drops in my kill zone doing quite abit of damage, as you cn see far too much apparel, and too much silver prices really need to be adjusted so you can sell more, just for less but thats my opinion.
