Ideas / Modded Faction Idea (The Awoken)
August 12, 2020, 09:09:27 PM
Inspirations: Regrowth Biomes, Wasteland, Fallout.

Theme: The original inhabitants of this world before a cataclysm nearly wiped out all life on this planet long ago. They've been asleep in cryptosleep caskets for 1000s of years, until now. They see themselves as the rightful rulers of this planet and view all outsiders with suspicion. They especially detest the Empire.

Tech Level: Equivalent to Outlander. Starting relations: (Equivalent to Rough Outlander) But their expertise is cryptosleep caskets and stasis. Hence they will sell you cryptosleep caskets and maybe even custom drugs that can put people in stasis.

Apparel: Their pawns will wear gas masks and other apparel to protect against toxic fall out.

Custom Event: They will ocassionally demand that one of your pawns either renounce their royal title (if applicable), pay a protection fee, or face an immediate powerful attack.

The End of the Road

As Max lay dying in a hovel right outside a long dormant interstellar spaceship, he reflected back on the events of his life.

He had lived out his life on the former urbworld of Burnham. He was a loser. Born into a troubled broken home, he was told that he had psychological problems and that nothing was his fault. When they tried to fix him, be burnt down the psych ward. So the authorities did the reasonable thing, sentence him to 100 years of cryptosleep. The thinking was that Burnham would have the technology to fix whatever was broken in him within a 100 years. It was also a heavy punishment.

While asleep, war broke out. The big bombs dropped, and the world came to an end. 100 years turned into a 1000. Then when the cyrptosleep's power finally gave out, he awoke to a world of horrors.

In the new world, Max had become a hero. He had loved, and lost. Gained a wife, and lost a wife, saved few decent people, and lost a few friends as well. But through it all he had endured. Just him and his chain shotgun.

Now it had all come down to this. He had led a group of survivors all the away across the planet to an interstellar space ship. One was a woman named Pepper. She was a woman that meant a lot to him. He had always desired her as a new wife. Pepper wouldn't go along with it. She was already married. But that was ok. He had gotten her to the ship and knowing that she would be leaving shortly would be worth while.

Pepper knelt down next to Max's sleeping sack. She looked at his wounds and frowned.

Pepper: Your wound's don't look good Max. So we're going to put you in one of the ship's cryptosleep caskets. We'll head for a glitterworld and they can patch you up when we get there.

Max shook his head. "I'm not leaving Pepper. This world is my home. Besides, my wounds are fine." Max weakly pulled himself to his feel and steadied himself.

Pepper frowned: What are you talking about? We walked half way across the planet to get here. This world is a ruin. It's nothing but wasteland and cannibals. How could you say that you're staying?

Max grinned a little bit. "I'm too broken for a glitterworld. But this is a rimworld now, and it's right where I belong. The rest of you should leave. Find a better life for yourself out there. You deserve that."

Pepper: Max please sit down, you're scaring me.

Max shook his head as he started to limp off toward the door. Pepper couldnt find the courage to stop him.

The next day, they found Max's body next to a toxic waste barrel laying down looking up into the sky. It looked like he had just lay down near the barrel and went to sleep, knowing that the barrel's poison would quickly kill him.

The survivors buried him right next to the ship. Max had  gone to sleep the first time a loser. But the second time, a hero.

RIP Max!

The last year...

Randy walks back in after his smoke break so he can finish telling the story...

Randy Random: That wasn't the end of the story. No sir. After giving up on rebuilding civilization and leaving the wasteland, Max decided to walk half way across the planet and leave in an interstellar space ship. The journey involved traversing temperate forests and a swamp. The last stretch of the journey involved going back into the wastelands on the other side of the planet, where the ship was located.

Esther was killed by a wild panther within the first few days, but Max could travel much quicker on his own. He didn't remain alone for long though.

Soon he was joined by Jack, a former sherrif that had managed to reach a shelter and get into a cryptosleep casket right before the nuclear bombs went offf. A former cop and a former criminal, not a bad team right? It gets better though.

Pepper sent Max a distress signal. She had been captured by cannibalistic tribesmen. Max rescued her, but she still wouldn't sleep with him.

Then a former tribesmen that had turned wild wandered into their camp. Pepper tamed him, and then discovered it was Lucher, her husband! That's rich ain't it?

So the group made it all the way to the ship. But they were running out of food again. So they mounted an all assault on the local insect hive. The insects swarmed across the river, and Max lit em up with his chain shot gun, killing two megascarabs single handedly. They won the battle, and would have enough food from insect meat to maybe get by for a while, but Max was pretty badly injured.

Now he's got two infections. Will this be the end for the great wasteland wanderer?  Tune in next time, same bat time, same bat channel!

BTW: I've concluded I can only do this scenario on rainforest. Other biomes dont feel right.

Stories: The Prison Camp Raid

Characters: Glitterworld Officer, Lt Catherine (Long Sword), Sergeant Pepper (Incendiary Launcher), Space Marine Kana (Sniper rifle), Space Marine Strickland (Revolver), Ho Chi (Imperial Defector, Heavy SMG). Rainforest Biome

Lt. Catherine and her squad of rebels arrived at the prison camp in the dead of night and assembled behind a small hill. Command had ordered her squad to attack the camp and free the rebel POWs being held there.

Catherine: Alright, Ho Chi, lay down a mine field of IEDs right behind this hill. Once the minefield is in place, Pepper and Kana will lay down incendiary and sniper fire on the Imperials. Once they start moving up, fall back to behind the mine field and we'll pick them off at the choke point behind this hill. Let's move.

No sooner had Ho Chi laid down the first IED when he started taking mortar fire from an Imperial mortar. Incendiary shells started exploding around his position  burning massive swathes of the forest around him. He quickly fell back to a position behind the hill while Kana and Pepper crept around the fires to take aim at the Imperials at the prison camp.

Pepper leveled an incendiary grenade right into the prison building, causing the wall to catch on fire. With any luck, the wall would take enough damage to give the prisoners time to escape. Kana took a shot at the head of a prison guard and missed. Their weapons were answered by the loud thunk of a charge lance, which whizzed right by Pepper's head.

Catherine: Come on fall back! Let's go.

Strickland and Ho Chi laid down covering fire as Pepper and Kana fell back behind the hill. Pepper lobbed another incendiary grenade to create another forest fire to cover their retreat. Once they were safely behind cover, Katherine peeked out over the hill.

She saw the forms of the massively armored Imperial soldiers and knights approaching. She noticed that several were knights with glowing monoswords and crackling power shields.

Catherine: Seargent, keep lobbing those incendiaries to drive them into the minefield!

Pepper started to lay down the incendiary fire and the advancing Imperials adjusted their advance accordingly.

Then it started to rain..

The fires died down and the knights went around the minefield and directly toward the position of the rebels.

Catherine: We've been outmaneuvered. Every one fall back now!

The rebels started to leapfrog back into the Jungle. But Ho Chi and Strickland were the last ones to fall back and the knights were upon them.

Strickland: Eat lead slackers! He emptied six bullets into the nearest approaching knight. The bullets bounced harmlessly off the Knight's shield. Several bullets from Ho Chi broke the shield but the rest of his magazine only dented the knight's recon armor. In one swoop, the Knight decapitated Strickland with his mono sword. While Ho Chi frantically tried to reload his magazine another knight ran his monosword through Ho Chi's chest, killing him instantly.

Catherine looked on in horror from a distance. She had just lost her first battle...

I was afraid of that... LOL

BTW play through just ended. One suped up Imperial with a charge rifle killed 6 insurgents single handedly. I guess they didn't need the dire raid afterall.

I'll have more stories to come from this game. But, I had an idea.

I wanted to turn one of my pawns into a suicide bomber, any ideas on how to do this? My only idea was to surround the pawn with IEDS and then have him throw a molotov into it when enemy pawns get close, that's really more defensive though. Offensive version would be better!

Game: Custom Scenario Insurgents
MODS: Preemptive Strike, Go Explore, Dire Raids, Faction Control (Empire + Civil Outlanders Only)

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2174230246

Story:

Catherine had a long distinguished career as a Lieutenant on a Glitterworld. After retiring, she traveled to a rimworld called Northam to take a job as a colonel for an Outlander Militia.

Then the Empire invaded. The war lasted about three days before the outlander factions surrendered. The Empire set up Imperial Governors to consolidate their gains, then started to forcibly take outlander property and redistribute  it to their knights and other title holders.

A few months later, the insurgency began and Catherine found herself in charge of small insurgent cell in the middle of a tropical jungle. Her orders were simple. Ambush Imperial patrols in the area, disrupt their caravans, and stay alive.

Catherine's Report:

I've been waging this war in the jungle for about a year and a half now. During that time, we've ambushed numerous Imperial patrols using a combination of sniper attacks, IEDS, and close in melee combat. We've also re-supplied nearby insurgent bases, and housed recently liberated insurgent POWs.

Casualties however have been high, running at 50% and I take responsibility for that. I led one failed raid to liberate an Imperial prison camp that led to three casualties. More recently, an Imperial suppression squad killed two of my men in our own base. In another set back, Imperial sympathizers detained at our base broke loose, beat my men unconscious, and stole some of our firearms.

Our weapons are sufficient, but the Imperial troops have much better armor. To compensate for that, we need more recruits. Regretably, my men have had to resort to detaining civilians and forcing them to join our cause. There will probably be many more horrors to come.

I know its only a matter of time before the full weight of the Imperial army descends on our base in a DIRE RAID, that's why we are ready to move out at a moments notice, leaving the Imperials with nothing but IED infested tunnels to clear out. But that will mean maintaining a good recon system. I'm not sure if what we have will be good enough.

But this is the cost of freedom. Our cause is just. We will prevail. Death to the Empire.

3 Years in the Wasteland
Custom Scenario: Escaped Convicts
Mods: Vanilla Biomes Regrowth, Wasteland, Faction Control (All factions hostile tribes), and Go Explore. Played on strive to survive with some parts amped up to blood and dust. Story narrated by Randy Random.

This story is about a man named Max. If he were the sort of man to keep tabs on things, this would be his stats.
[Will insert later]

Max was sentenced to serve 100 years in a maximum security cryo-sleep prison on an urbworld for the crime of arson. But before he could finish his sentence, a nuclear war blew everything up. So he ended up sleeping way longer. About a 1000 years later, the crypto sleep casket's power system finally gave out and all the prisoners all woke up.

The mechanoid guards killed most of them, but Max and a few other prisoners escaped. They found themselves in an unforgiving wasteland.

But Max was able to build a home for himself with two other prisoners. He married a female prisoner named Neka and for a while he was a happy man.

That ended when Neka was stabbed to death by a savage tribesman. The other prisoner was eaten by a warg. In despair, Max, set his home on fire, and then set about wandering in sadness. He collapsed under the withering toxic rain and was on the verge of death, but his story didn't end there. The man in black came, and saved him.

Then Max and the Man in Black went out into the wastelands to search for salvage. But on the way to a stash of goodies, the Man in Black caught the plague and died. Max took his flak jacket and kept moving.

When Max reached the stash of goodies he was ambushed and stabbed by a tribesman. Max killed him with his revolver, but was injured in the process. Since Max couldn't tend to himself, this was a problem. But Max looted a mastercrafted auto shotgun from a burned out police station and kept moving.

Max lost a fair amount of blood, and collapsed for a while, but the wounds healed on their own without tending. When he got back to his home, he found that a wanderer named Pepper had joined. Max was reluctant to let her join. After losing Neka, he didn't want to build a community or anything else. But he needed someone to patch him up when he got wounded, so Pepper was allowed to join.

The next two years were less eventful. (Probably because someone else was story teller, not me!) Max and Pepper fortified their encampment, surrounding it with walls. This helped keep the wargs out. Others joined the community. Some were wild men that had lost their minds in the wasteland, others were escaped prisoners from the prison, and still others were lone tribesmen. The community was never more than six, but for the wastelands, that was a big group.

But the wasteland could never produce enough food. Each year, when food was about to run out, Max would exile some community members, so that there would be enough food. The first year he exiled two colonists, the next year he had to exile four colonists. Some of the exiled joined the savage tribes while others were enslaved. But whenever a colonist was captured, Max would always come back and rescue them, as soon as he had enough food.

But Pepper never left. She reminded Max of Neka and Max sought a new relationship. But Pepper was never attracted to Max and so the lone wanderer remained alone.
At the end of the third year, I decided to spice things up. I sent five tribals their way (Five tribals vs three colonists), but Max killed them all. He was getting good at killing. I was proud of him. But I didn't want him to get too comfortable. So that's when I sent in the toxic fall out. So Max had toxic rain and toxic fall out to deal with. So the colonists tried to harvest their potatoe crop, but befotre they could get it all carted away into storage, the toxic fall and rain killed most of it off. So Max was faced with starvation again.

So they finally decided to leave the wastelands. One colonist died from fall out while trying to stage the caravan. That left just three colonists, Max, Pepper, and a young exiled Imperial researcher named Escher that had wandered into the encampment and joined up a few days before.

Out on the road, Max asked Pepper to start a relationship one more time (it was the 5th time he had asked), and again Pepper refused. So Max decided it was time for them to go their separate ways. Pepper was banished for good.

So Max and Escher walked for nine days and left the wasteland. They arrived in a forest, Max looked around and it seemed like a nice place to start a new life. Max wanted to be alone, but he needed Esther to patch him up. He looked back at the wasteland he had just left and wondered and if he was destined to go back and wander the wasteland forever...

Wow, that's a lot of cannibalism, you must have had some serious mental breaks after that.

For the wasteland biome mod here are a few pointers:

1. Increase rainfall and decrease temp to max out the wasteland biome.
2. Toxic rainfall is the biggest challenge. My people almost starved because it rained for 20 days straight and I didn't risk planting crops during that time. My advice is plant whenever you can as soon as you can but watch toxic build up carefully.
3. The insectoids that start on the map don't really function right. I recommend going into dev mode and deleting them before you start.

Ideas / Expand Royalty Mechanics to Other Factions
July 10, 2020, 10:27:59 PM
It took some time, but I've really come to enjoy Royalty. The Royal Ascendancy path to victory really rewards those players that don't want to win by leaving the rimworld. (Afterall, why would they leave, they're comfortable!) Now after playing the MegaCorp MOD, I realized that the mechanics of Royalty could be applied to other factions.

The most obvious choice to me would be the Pirate faction. You could get the opportunity to become the ultimate pirate warlord by doing really bad evil things. Quests would focus on attacking other factions, raiding caravans, etc. But doing good things like trading with other factions will work against your path to pirate ascendancy.

Just some food for thought.

So I've been playing with ReGrowth: Biomes of The Rim - Wasteland, and this is a seriously challenging biome but a must for a post apoc themed game.

This is the first time I had to resort to cannibalism to survive. Fortunately eating a few prisoners was enough to carry them through until the next potato crop could be harvested.

The next in game year, I had to banish two out of six colonists to keep from starving and having to resort to cannibalism again.

Here is a screenshot from one of my failed play throughs with this biome. This group was too weak from starving to survive a raid, they killed the raiders but then collapsed, and a fire killed everyone. Lesson learned. Don't underestimate the threat of starvation!

I'd say it helps people cope.

Maybe instead of a mood boost, a funeral could reduce the extreme penalty of losing a loved one.

I'd also say, it would only happen if you put the corpse in a sarcophagus. Just to give people a reason to build one!

You can search for my custom scenario on steam workshop "Midworld Combat Brigade". It starts you off with a very WWI kind of feel.

You can also use faction control mod to limit the factions to pirates and outlanders.

Stories / Gobbell's Demise
June 17, 2020, 07:39:33 PM
The Demise of Gobbel (Mine Corp Sequel)

Gobbel was a character from my mining expedition story. Now he has come back for a brief sequel with the help of the Megacorp Mod! Since I've never lost an entire colony in an accidental fire, I definitely thought that this play through warranted a story!

Story:

SS: Jiangxin Interstellar Transport (The JIT)

Gobbell wandered down the cramped narrow hallway of the JIT on his way to the rest room. After that, he was scheduled to settle in for a centuries long cryosleep while the JIT traversed the vast distances of interstellar space, on its way from MineCorp's home world, to a rimworld in a nearby system.

After relieving himself, he decided to take his time and shave his face. While looking in the mirror, he realized that he wasn't a young man anymore. He was 58 now, but as he looked at himself in the mirror, he couldn't help but think about the first time he went to a rimworld some 20 years earlier.

He still had fond memories of that miserable mining expedition to the ice ball rim world on the edge of MineCorp's home system. The expedition had been somewhat of a success. Well, he had survived, so to him that was a success. There were sets backs to be sure. Famine, hypothermia, savage tribal people killing colonists, but it was ultimately profitable. "It was profitable!" Gobbell muttered out loud to the mirror, even though he knew no one could here him.

The next 20 years had proven to be somewhat less adventurous. He had steadily climbed the corporate ladder, working his way up to mid level management while at the same time navigating a tense marriage, and putting two kids through university.  But his career had stalled and his plans for an early retirement had not panned out.

That's why he had volunteered for a new opportunity to lead an interstellar joint venture between MineCorp and a SunCorp subsidiary operating on a nearby rimworld.  There were risks to be sure, and he would be leaving his family behind, but now he finally had a chance to make it all the way to the Board of Directors, and extend his lifespan by a few hundred years, not to mention becoming insanely wealthy and powerful in the process. All he had to do was dig up another rimworld. "I did it before, I can do it again." Gobbell muttered as he shuffled his way back to the cryptopod and closed the hatch.

Centuries Later... The AI persona core that controlled the JIT, fired off the escape pods and modules containing the necessary supplies for the colony. Once that was accomplished, it set a course for a return voyage to Minecorp Hq.

Gobbell, Jayna, and Lee arrived at a barren desert that intersected a dirt road. The first thing Gobbell did was survey his surroundings. Once he observed a familiar land mark and the dirt road, he realized that they had landed in the right part of the planet. This area was known as Corporate Alley for the Sun Corp activity in the area.

As Jayna and Lee got out of their drop pods, Gobbell decided to address them.

Good morning. My name is Mr. Gobbell, I will be your supervisor for the duration of this assignment. Although this is technically a joint venture, we'll be officially operating under direction from SunCorp management. Now if you activate your E-Pads now, I'll lay out the planned schematics for our operations.

He gestured to a small hill in the distance.

Gobbell: "I want steel walls and concrete floors set up around that hill. Once that's done, we'll dig into the hill to create additional rooms. The chem fuel powered generator will go right next to the storage area, which of course, is where the chem fuel will be stored."

Lee raised a hand: "Umm yeah we don't know how to build that."

Gobbell frowned as he sized up Lee and Jayna. They appeared disheveled and sloven, not eager to be here and not attentive at all.

Gobbell: Umm, alright, do we have an engineer on site? One of you is supposed to be the engineer.

Lee shook his head: I'm just a help desk employee. Umm I'm not really sure why I'm here? Where are we right now?

Jayna raised a hand: Sorry I'm just a sales clerk at the company snackshop, you know the one on the 51st floor? Yeah I'm not really sure why I'm here either. I thought I was going on vacation? But this doesn't look like Outer Rings resort though, soo, maybe they made a mistake?

Gobbell: This is a SunCorp mining expedition, not a damn vacation. We need to set up base camp. So how about this. I'll set up the complex facilities, you two just work on the floor and walls.

He sighed.

Two Seasons Later

Two seasons into the expedition, Gobbell had everything running smoothly. He had obtained a formal title from SunCorp as an independent contractor, and surface mining operations were proving to be quite productive. With the help of two dromedarys, vast quantities of steel were hauled to the nearest Sun Corp base at regular intervals. In exchange, Gobbell had purchased additional food supplies, since his small desert garden was not producing nearly enough to feed everyone. Further, a captured pirate named Ema had joined the group and was proving to be a good worker.

Gobbell had summoned the group to the dining area for a daily meeting.

Gobbell: Right so Ema, you will come with me on the caravan bound for Sun Corp today. It should take about a day or so to get out there. We'll stock up on supplies and come back. Jayna, and Lee, continue normal operations here until I get back. Any questions?

Lee raised his hand: Umm one question, why don't we have any guns? Like, we keep getting attacked I people, I think we should have them.

Gobbell rolled his eyes: I told you this yesterday. I need to get promoted before they'll sell me any guns. They don't just sell guns to anyone now. Any other questions?

Ema raised a hand: Yeah, it's going to get really cold out there. Do you have a spare parka for me to wear?

Gobbell shook his head: You'll be fine. It's a desert for crying out loud. Deserts don't get that cold. Now come on let's get to work.

Hours later, Ema was laying in the dirt road, paralyzed by serious hypothermia and unable to move. Gobbell looked annoyed.

Gobbell: Yah know Ema, I've had it up to here with you nursing these so called injuries all the time. You can go back to being a pirate for all I care, you're fired. Gobbell grabbed the dromedaries' reigns and kept moving up the road without a further thought.

When Gobbell arrived with the fresh supplies from SunCorp, he motioned for Lee and Jayna to join him in the dining room again.

Gobbell: Right so Ema is no longer with us. She umm, kind of had an epiphany and decided she wanted to be a pirate again and drink rum and stuff so I had to let her go.

Jayna got out of her chair as a tear streaked down her eye. "You're a liar and a jerk Gobbel, she's dead and you killed her!"

She stormed out of the dining room and out of site.

Gobbel frowned. "Umm, yeah so ahh, Lee, can you go find her and make sure she doesn't break anything? If she wants to cry it out that's cool, but umm yeah.

Lee nodded sluggishly. "Ok boss," he muttered before leaving the dining area himself.

Gobbel: Yeah, that didn't go so well.

Instead of going to her bedroom, Jayna decided to sneak into the storage area. She knew that Lee would be on his way to her bed room to try and comfort her, but that was the last thing she wanted.  Once she reached the storage area, she slouched down against a nearby wall and reached for her lighter and smoke leaf joint. With a sigh, she lit up the joint and inhaled deeply, then she let the joint fall to the ground, next to a toppled canister of chem. fuel that had been slowly leaking for the last several days.

Lee walked to Jayna's bedroom but didn't see her in there. He looked around some other parts of the base, but Jayna was nowhere in site. He saw Gobbell talking to a SunCorp rep on the coms console but decided not to bother him. Instead he went to work in the garden.

Moments later, a massive incendiary explosion tore through the storage area of the base, sending out a shock wave that knocked Gobbell and Lee to their feet. When Lee looked up, the entire storage facility was ablaze, and the fire was spreading fast. Jayna's terrified screams could be heard coming from the blaze.

Lee grabbed a hold of Gobbell.

Lee: We got to get out of here, the whole base is going up in flames!

Gobbell grabbed Lee hard around the neck and shouted. "You go in there and get Jayna, I'll grab the supplies. Come on!"

As soon as Gobbell and Lee entered the storage area, sparks ignited a secondary supply of chemfuel, creating a second explosion that knocked them unconscious. Within another hour, flames had consumed the entire base, creating a column of smoke that could be seen from miles away. ..

An official SunCorp investigation later revealed that the cause of the fire was accidental, and that Gobbell had engaged in gross negligence by storing nearly 500 liters of chemfuel in a room with steel walls and a concrete floor with no fire poppers. Minecorp was required to reimburse SunCorp for the damage. As a result, Minecorp placed a lien on Gobbell's family home. His widow was not happy.

About a week later, SunCorp held a memorial service for Gobbell, Jayna, and Lee. The service was held near the ruins of the base.

Besides the minister, the only people that showed up were Gobbell's cohorts from the very first Mine Corp expedition: Salamo, Chung, and Ramos. They had emigrated to this world nearly a decade before Gobbell arrived and had thrown themselves in with a bunch of rough outlanders.

Salamo raised a cup of beer in the air to offer a toast.

Salamo: Gobbell, when you were young, you were a wimp. And when you got older, you turned into a real #$%^&*. But at least you never got us killed.

Ramos: He went out the way he lived, a flaming &^$!

Chung: I'm just going to drink now. Rest in Piece Gobbell.

The three rough men downed their cups of beer, then Salamo took the remainder of the bottle's contents and poured it over Gobbell's grave.

The End
