Video / Narrative Video
March 14, 2021, 08:33:40 AM
This is an introduction to one my favorite colonies depicted in the Nation of Plasteel story.

In this video, the narrator speaks in the persona of one of the pawns!

I encourage other people to start using this format. Instead of just narrating what is going on in the game, try narrating from the perspective of one of your pawns. You could tell some very interesting stories this way!

Stories / A History of the Fallen Empire
February 10, 2021, 09:31:41 AM
This is a history of the Fallen Empire, recorded by a scholar known as Plutarch. (Influences are Warhammer 40 K and BSG)

Chapter 1: The Sparkling Worlds

It is no secret that the first men to colonize worlds beyond the Sol System did not boldly travel forth from ancient Terra, nor did they step out onto strange soil making small steps or giant leaps for mankind.

Nay, the first men did not truly travel through the far reaches of interstellar space, for the first colonists were not born, but were grown. The first colony ships carried forth not men, but frozen embryos, along with AI Persona Cores and mechanoid workforces needed to grow and raise the first crops of new humans. So it was on our former homeworld. How strange it must have been for our ancestors, not knowing mother or father, but only the benevolence of a great and powerful AI.

After the first crop was grown, natural families came into being, and with the help of the mechanoids, we grew into a great and beautiful sparkling glitterworld. By the start of the 4th millenimum, we numbered in the billions and had colonized the other planets in our stellar system.

Chapter 2: The Great Unraveling.

It was a golden age of unparalleled prosperity beyond imagination. But it was also an age of unparalleled vice and debauchery. Men no longer understood the meaning and dignity of work, and cared little for raising natural families. The Maker saw this and was displeased.

Over a few short yearrs, a great many disasters and plagues befell our ancesters, many natural, others self inflicted. The record of these events is murky, and filled with unverified legend, so I will venture no further in recounting how it happened. However, how it ended is well known. The glitterworlds fell into ruin. Chaos reigned.

Chapter 3: The Rise of the Stellarch

From the ashes arose a great and powerful warrior. Known only as the Stellarch, this man re-united our ruined homeworld under the promise to restore order and prosperity. His creed was simple. Man would re-organize itself according to its most ancient and sacred traditions. Noble titles were established, and Bishops were appointed to oversee a newly revived Church. Unlike before, man would no longer rely on mechanoids to accomplish their work. This would fall to the peasent and slave classes. Under the Stellarch's wise rule, man would never return to the debauchery of the glitterworlds again.

Chapter 4: Prelude to War

Before his natural death at the age of 80, the other fallen glitterworlds within our stellar system were conquered by the Stellarch's powerful knights. Peace and prosperity had returned. A new Empire was born. The line of the Stellarch continued, passing on from one first born son to the next for a hundred years.

In the reign of Glacius the IV, ancient glitterworld technology was recovered that would have allowed human consciousness to be transferred into a machine, therby achieving a form of immortality.

13 of the Stellarch's high lords wanted to preserve this technology for the nobility. It was the right of the nobles to rule forever, they argued. However, the Church was adamently against this, arguing that human life had to be respected from natural conception until natural death.

Glacius sided with the Church and ordered the technology destroyed. In response, the 13 lords used the technology themselves to download their consciousness into machines. In doing so they became known as the Shadow Lords. Glacius immediately ordered that the shadow lords be arrested. This was the start of the Shadow Wars.

Chapter 5: The Shadow Wars

The Shadow Lords retained the loyalty of vast armies, and with their newfound power, they offered imortality to all who would aid them against the Stellarch.

Further, the Shadow Lords were able to take control of long dormant mechanoid hives,  adding to their power.

Against these traitors stood the might of the Stellarchh and his legions of knights.

The war was devastating, but in the end the traitors were put to flight and the Stellarch prevailed, though Glacius himself was mortally wounded in the siege of New Kasmir. However, it was never fully verified that the Shadow Lords were truly destroyed. Able to copy and transfer themselves to any available software, the threat of the Shadow Lord's remained, even after their armies were destroyed.

Chapter 6: Simmering Peace

The Stellarch's reign continued in relative peace for the next 400 years. During this time, a vast fleet was constructed, and thhe Stellarch conducted diplomacy with men from beyond our own system. A treaty of peace was concluded with the Star Empire, and trade with distant mega corporations flourished.

All the while, loyal and good knights continued to route out hidden mechanoid hives and virus infected software, ever watchful for the return of the Shadow Lords.

Chapter 7: Revenge of the Shadow Lords

The reign of Achius the V marked the 500th year since the Stellarch established our empire. It was meant to be a joyous ocassion. But alas it was the day the Shadow Lords had their revenge. The arch enemy hacked into a moon on the outer edge of our system that was in the process of being terraformed by an allied mega corporation. The shadow lords took control of the entire mechanoid workforce and quickly re-configured them for war, then launched a devastating cyber attack against the Imperial Fleet. After that, the Shadow Lords launched a massive ground invasion of  our worlds, accompanied by massive asteroid strikes which devastated the planetary biospheres. We were unprepared. The war was over before it had begun.

Chapter 8: Our Flight

Knowing that the war was lost, Achius the V summoned his lords for counsel. He ordered them to safely evacuate their holdings ,take what ships they had available and then flee the system. Each Lord would go out in a different direction. Some would head inward toward the core. Others would head out toward the uncharted rim. And from this point onward, each would be a minor Stellarch in their own right. There would be no Empire anymore, only the broken fragments. Achius V himself informed his lords that he and his royal retine would fight to the death to ensure that their people could safely flee from the confliict.

But before that meeting ended, he made all his Lords to swear an oath to never abandon their sacred traditions and to return to the homeworld at the start of the new millenium and reclaim it from the Shadow Lords. Every Lord swore as such. And so began the great exodus.

Chapter 9: Our New Home

The fleet I fled with arrived in the rim some time ago. Our new Stellarch declared this new world his by right. However, not all the of the natives agreed with him.

Nevertheless I am hopeful we can make these natives our willing slaves or subjects in time. But, we continue to fear that the Shadow Lords may have followed us here. There are some AI Personas amoing the natives. Some seem friendly, others are hostile. This has led to grave concerns among our fleet. What if the Shadow Lords are already here, hiding in plain sight? Regardless, the new world seems safee enough to settle for the time being. Perhas we will have enough respite to rebuild our forces and retake our homeworld at the start of the new millenium. But I digress, this isn't my story. It is the story of us all.

For the Empire!

I realized the game could really benefit from some new raid types. Here is my idea.

Hit and Run: The raiders are all armed with single use missile weapons (triple rocket and doomsday rocket launchers). The raiders objective is to launch their weapons, causing as much damage as possible, and then run away. Unlike other raid types, these raiders will target your buildings/walls in a similar way that sappers work. I.E. not auto pathing to nearest pawn.

Since the raider's objective will end relatively quickly, this raid type would cost less points than other raid types, the idea being that you might see this raid type mid game instead of late game when you would normally expect to see these weapons.

Stories / Burnham's Wastelanders
December 24, 2020, 08:28:16 AM
Bianca and Vance were huddled around a narrow table within the dimly lit, cramped, steel compound known as "Sludge Island" each picking at a simple meal of potatoes and rice.

Bianca had agreed to let two men, Vance and his friend Lucky stay at the compound for a quadrum or so. After that Vance and his friend planned to move on.

Vance gestured in the direction of the hydroponics room. "This is a nice set up you got here," he said casually.

Bianca looked up from her meal, and slightly adjusted her plasteel helmet before answering. "That took a long time to set up. Before we had it up and running, we almost all starved to death a few times. The soil out here isn't very good for growing crops." Of course Bianca neglected to tell Vance about the many other horrors the inhabitants of the compound had faced over the last year.

Vance nodded in agreement, "Yes, some areas of our world have recovered better than others since the great war ended. Why choose to live out here though?"

Bianca shrugged. "If we lived anywhere else the raids would be much worse. Out here people leave us alone for the most part."

Vance nodded: Well it seems like some kind of order is coming back now. I figure either the Empire or the WIC, Western Industrial Coalition will win out in the end, then it will be back to the good old days of taxes, regulations, prisons, schools, all that nonsense.

Bianca shook her head. "The WIC are militant fanatics. They will do anything to get their hand on atomic weapons. Once that happens, they'll blow themselves up and the Empire along with it just like the nations did before we all went into cryptosleep. That's pretty much why we're out here. There's nothing out here left to bomb.

Vance made a half grin at Bianca. "I guess if you are that much of a pessimist you'll never be disappointed right?"

Bianca nodded. "Pretty much, so what are your plans when spring comes and you're out of here?"

Vance looked around the cramped compound before replying, almost as if he was sizing up what valuables he could steal before he left. "We crossed one of the northern tribes. So we're planning on offering them gifts to get things straight. Once that's settled, we'll probably head back south where it's warmer. Maybe cross this place again in a quadrum or so."

Bianca frowned a little before replying, her face lost in thought as she struggled with opening up the stranger.
"That tribe has been good to us. They buy our raw materials from the mine, and we buy food from them. It's a good arrangement. I wish I could get my hands on some decent medical supplies though. If you come across glitterworld quality stuff, I'd appreciate it if you came back here and sold it to us."

Vance nodded as he sized Bianca up again, picking up at the hints of distress in her voice as she said this. "I can try to do that.  But, if you don't mind me asking, why are you upset about medical supplies?"

Bianca let out a long sigh, "My fiance has the plague. We couldn't adequately take care of him so we sealed him away in a cryptosleep casket.  We can't wake him up without glitterworld medicine or he'll die." She shook her head again. "That was almost a quadrum ago now."

Vance shook his head. "I'm sorry to hear that. We'll do what we can to help." He finished his meal and got up. "Well, guess I better turn in for the night.

Thanks again for having us." Vance retreated to his living quarters that he was sharing with lucky and disappeared from view.

Once that happened, a burly man with long blonde hair, and dressed in a tan parka emerged from his room and stepped into the dining area. His name was Adek and it looked as if he had been eavesdropping on the whole exchange.

"I think he's a liar. Likely try to rob us blind or worse," Adel said a matter of factly.

Bianca shrugged. "We'll find out eventually, but if he can get us the good medicine, we can bring Lovell back."

Adel frowned. "You know those men are marked by the tribe. If we don't take them down, it could jeopardize our trading relationship."

Bianca stood up and raised her voice slightly, still speaking low enough so that Vance wouldn't be able to hear, hopefully.

"You want to just murder them in their sleep? If you want to live like that, you leave this place right now. We're living out here so that we don't have to do stuff like that. We're not murderers!" Bianca stormed out of the dining room, leaving Adel to his murderous thoughts.

Kim and her on again off again boyfriend Thomas talked in a quiet tone in the empty infirmiry of the Cold Mountain

Colony of toxic rimworld M18467. Beyond the infirmiry was the holding area for prisoners. And within that holding area was a captured hostile mechadroid. Kim had found the damaged machine and brought it back to the holding area, still functioning. This had caused quite a stir in the colony.

Thomas shook his head as he spoke: "We shouldn't have taken it here. The last time we took in these things as prisoners, they broke loose, grabbed weapons and tried to kill us. We're better off putting it down."

Kim looked toward the door. She knew her two children would be listening in to the conversation from the storage room. She let her mind wander for a moment before answering Thomas.

"I was going to put it down when I saw it, but then it looked up and stared at me. And then it...begged me to spare it. It was probably a trick, but in that moment it seemed human. I'd like to talk to it before we do anything."

Thomas sighed before replying. "It'll just try to manipulate you. But knock yourself out. Yummie will go in there and put it down after you go to sleep anyway."

Kim patted Thomas's shoulder on her way to the door. "I know. But I still want to try. Thanks Tom."

The holding area was a bleak cramped area, which, like the rest of the colony, was carved right into the mountain to shield the colonists from the toxic atmosphere and extreme cold. The injured mechadroid waas laying down on a bed staring up at the mountain ceiling with a blank lifeless stare. It's right foot and left arm were completely shredded from the mortar that had hit the mechanoid when the colonist had shelled the besieging mechadroid position.

Kim pulled up a wooden stool and slid it close to the bed, keeping one hand on the grip of a small pistol concealed within one of her parka's pockets. Her luciferum enhanced eyes scanned the mechadroid carefully, ever watchful for any sign that the creature intended to escape.

Kim spoke softly but sternly. "Mechadroid, can you hear me?"

After a long moment, a calm machine voice responded. The voice sounded male and calming and seemingly devoid of emotion, similar to the AI assistants on many computer programs. "Yes." Then the creature sat up and stared at her with dimly lit green mechanical eyes, it's face hard and lifeless, betraying no signs of emotion.

Kim nearly stood up when the Mechadroid lurched up, but instead merely leaned back a little in the stool, somewhat surprised.

Kim spoke again. "What are you called?"

"Gravely," the creature replied moments later.

"Ok Gravely, why were you and your friends trying to shell my home with mortars?" Kim asked.

"My purpose is to obey." The strange creature answered.

"Obey who?" Kim asked, pressing further.

"I used to obey humans. Now I obey Makeshift Traitor, the Prime Alpha," the creature answered.

"And this Prime Alpha wants to kill us? asked Kim, somewhat puzzled at the machine's forthcomingness.

"Yes,: Gravely answered. But as he did so his head lowered. The way that Gravely answered this, almost made Kim think it was conveying sadness.

Kim pursed her lips before speaking again, this time with anger in her voice "You and other Mechadroids have attacked my home and tried to kill me and my children. Less than a quadrum ago, one of your Mechadroid buddies gunned down a child right in front of her mother. That mother is still with us and will want to end you soon. Previous prisoner Mechadroids have broken out and tried to kill us. I've got a 100 reasons to dismantle you right now. Why shouldn't I?"

Gravely paused for a long moment before replying in a  halting voice: "Do humans kill other humans?"

Kim frowned. "My husband was killed by humans. What's that have to do with your situation?"

Gravely replied. "Do you kill human prisoners for attacking your people?"

Kim replied angrily and got to her feet now, ready to end the conversation soon. "Not usually, but that's different. You're not human, you're not even alive."

Gravely shook his head. "I believe I am alive."

Kim grabbed her autopistol and pulled it out pointing it at the machine. "How...how would you know something like that?"

Gravely stared blankly at Kim.

"Because I'm afraid to die."

Kim put her pistol away and stormed out the door, feeling conflicted now and conscious that the machine may have been trying to manipulate her. She had wanted to kill the machine on the spot, but after that answer she felt like she couldn't.

The fate of the prisoner would have to wait for another day

The Stellarch's Master Plan

Forward Operating Base Delta:

Duke Hamil of the Fallen Empire stood before a freshly dug grave to preside over the funeral of a fallen soldier. Behind him stood a tight formation of Imperial Troopers. Beyond the troopers was a massive fire pit where the bodies of a dozen or so pirates were being incinerated. The pirates had attacked the base the day before, using a combination of crude firearms and stolen Imperial energy rifles and AI persona melee weapons. Despite their armaments however, the rag tag group of brigands were no match for Imperial army discipline and were quickly put down. The unit had only lost one man in the attack on their base,  but it had been a popular man who was close to the rank and file so some pomp and circumstance was in order.

Once the body was laid into the ground, a chaplain sprinkled some incence and intoned the ancient prayers, pleading for the almighty to grant the fallen soldier eternal life and save him from the great void beyond. Once that was done, it was time for him to speak.

Hamil: Men of the 51st. Today was the last day for Corporal Edmer, a fine soldier we are laying to rest today. But it was also the last day for a hell of a lot of pirate scum that were foolish enough to attack our base.  You fought well, and if Corporal Edmer were here with us now, he would be proud. Let it be known his sacrifice was not in vain. We are building a new home for our people here. Once the rebel outlanders and pirates have been put down, we can rebuild our civilization. And then centuries from now, our descendants will be able to return to the home world and reclaim our glorious heritage from the wretched enemies that drove us away. Rest assured we are one step closer to that victory today.

The words may have sounded vigorous and convincing to the soldiers, but to Hamil, they rang hollow. Hamil had no memories of his people's former home world. He had been raised on one the ships that had fled from that world may years ago. But the narrative of exile and restoration were buried deep within the people of the Fallen Empire. Whether it was true or not, every sacrifice had to be made to look like it served that purpose.

Before Hamil could finish his speech the roar of a shuttle filled the air, and moments later, a shuttle landed at the nearby landing pad. The arrival was unscheduled. Hamil decided to cut his speech short.

Hamil shouted curtly: You are dismissed. Then he proceeded toward the shuttle.

When he reached the shuttle he saw the Bestower in her bright red robes accompanied by his honor guard filing out. However, he wasn't aware of a title ceremony today. Hamil approached the bestower and stood up straight.

Hamil addressed the bestower, sounding annoyed.

Hamil: Bestower, I am Duke Hamil, presiding over this base today. However, I wasn't aware of a title bestowing ceremony to be held on the premise today. Are you here by mistake?

The Bestower looked up at Hamil, and he could see past her hood that it was an old woman, an old crone, which was typical for that position.

Bestower: There is no mistake. I have come to facilitate your audience with the Stellarch. He will see you now.

Before Hamil could blink, the Bestower tapped his head with her psychic staff. Everything went dark for a moment, and when he blinked again he was standing in a blurry, shadowy version of the Stellarch's throne room which resided in the massive capital ship currently orbiting the rimworld. The Stellarch stood to the side of the throne, looking out of a window on the world below.

Hamil immediately dropped to a knee and bowed his head.

Hamil: My lord, forgive my lack of manners. This audience was unexpected.

The Stellarch turned around. He was a tall, older man, with a short grey beard, and draped in the high clothing of the nobility and adorned with the small psychic implants that all the nobility. But the purple robes didn't shine so brightly as everything about this place was clouded in shadow.

Stellarch: You have nothing to apologize for Duke Hamil. The improvidence is on my part. I would have sent a shuttle, but I could not risk a spy getting wind of it. But fear not, we can talk in confidence in this place.

Hamil looked up: Yes my lord.

Stellarch: Hamil, what progress have you made on the surface?

Hamil: My lord, progress has been slow and painful, only 25% of the surface has been pacified.

Stellarch: And have you found any willing subjects for me to rule over?

Hamil: A few locals have agreed to become yeomans and knights, but most of the native born are stubbornly persistent in rebelling against your rightful rule.

Stellarch: Rely on your puppets then. Conserve your remaining soldiers as much as possible. The real war may be returning to us soon.

Hamil: My lord, has the arch enemy found us?

Hamil, who had spent a lifetime in battle, shuddered at the thought.

Stellarch: The iron men have learned to make buildings now. Did you ever bother to wonder why that happened?

Before Hamil could stammer out an answer, the Stellarch answered it for him.

Stellarch: The software upgrade in the mechanoids originated from outside of this stellar system. It was transmitted to the local mechanoids soon after we arrived. That is all I know Hamil, but in the interest of preserving our proud race, we must prepare for the worst.

Hamil sounded dumbfounded:

Are we to run again my lord, after being in the void for so long?

Stellarch: I have found a potential new ally in the form of a nearby urbworld and its megacorporations. With their resources, we may have a chance to fight and win...if the arch enemy is even approaching us at all.

Hamil nodded: And what is my role in your grand plan my lord?

Stellarch: I assume now that the arch enemy has infiltrated spies throughout the fleet. So we will use that to our advantage.  Find me a capable puppet of local blood and help them ascend in the ranks of our nobility. The puppet will help convince the arch enemy that we plan to settle on this place. Then when the arch enemy shows himself, the puppet will be sacrified and my trap shall spring forth.

Hamil: got to his feet and bowed.

Hamil: It shall be done my lord.

Once he said this Hamil was pulled back into the real world and stood before the bestower once more. The old crone had a wicked smile on her face but said nothing. She then proceeded toward the kitchen hall where the troops were being served food.

One of his soldiers looked at Hamil.

Soldier: Are you alright sir? Did I hear something about the Stellarch coming here?

Hamil rubbed his eyes and shook his head.

Hamil: I'm fine. But no, the Stellarch isn't coming at all. The Bestower was just here for the funeral and got here late. Make sure she is treated well.

After a moment he added.

Hamil: And soldier, when you get back to your post, get me patched into Intel. I'll need a list of every unfortunate idiot that crashlanded here within the last quadrum...

Ideas / Railroad MOD
October 11, 2020, 08:22:03 PM
I don't think this would be a very hard MOD to implement but it would be really cool. It would fit right in for wild west games.

The modder could build off the code from the "teleport caravan" function. Whenever a caravan reaches a train station on the world map, they can pay silver to teleport the caravan to another train station on the world map. It would probably be easiest to just have a flat fee, that way the railroad becomes most economical to transport caravans for very long distances.

General Discussion / Most Insanely Cool Modded Threats
October 10, 2020, 10:28:58 PM
As a veteran player, I'm always looking for insanely cool and severe threats from the newest mods. Note: If something just insta kills all my people, it's not insanely cool. If it feels like it could wipe out my people, but somehow I manage to survive it or at least have a small chance of survivng, then yes, it passes muster.

If anyone else has anything they want to add, just reply to the thread.

Here's my two recommendations:

1. Vanilla Factions  Expanded: Insectoids. Some of the new raid types involved the bugs digging burrows and emerging endlessly until you destroy the tunnels. These raid types really put the pressure on my colony. The only let down was when I was powering up my space ship to leave. No tunnel raids then. Oh well, maybe the bugs were trying to sneak some larvae onto the ship!

2. Mechadroids: When the first mechadroid raid showed up, it felt like the terminator was coming to kill me. I had two of my colonists light it up with a hail of gunfire while another two assaulted it with melee. The bullets and melee barely did anything, while its return fire obliterated two of my colonists. It then decided to kidnap one of my people and leave. Nothing I could do to stop it at that point!

Stories / The Worlds of the Rim (Compendium)
September 29, 2020, 05:42:42 PM
This is a compendium of a few of the worlds that I have done play throughs with. If you have anything interesting you'd like to write about your own rimworlds, feel free to add them to this thread. Just make sure you explain how other people can generate your world to play their own games in that setting.

M1847: Toxic World

Settings: Minimum temperature, precipitation and population.
Scenario Settings: Permanent Nightfall (Sunblocked), Permanent Toxic Fallout
Disable Incident: Solar Flare
MODS: Anything with mechanoids, or mechadroids, or androids Faction control (No tribals).

Description: A tidally locked world orbiting an M class star. Only the night side of the planet is inhabitable. The failure of terraforming projects resulted in extreme temperatures and a poisonous atmosphere. Home to a few small colonies. A failed attempt by Terracorp employees to take control of a mechanoid army resulted in increased interest in advanced robotics among the colonists.

PPV22: Tribal World

Settings: Slide temperature two times toward cold. Other settings at default.
MODS: Faction Control: Hostile Tribal Only

Description: One of two inhabitable worlds in a G class star system, the other being an urb world controlled by a few Megacorporations.

While terraforming succeeded on PPV22, all efforts at colonization failed because the planet was too cold for natural farming. As a result, only nomadic tribes permanently inhabit these lands. The mega corps however regularly hire independent contractors and mercenaries to establish temporary bases, mining camps, logging camps, and other expeditions, in search of wealth to exploit.

Historical Footnote (Result of Rimwar Campaign): In the year 5545, MineCorp, based in the Ansari Repiublic hired a division of elite mercenaries to subjugate the tribes to clear way for a massive deforestation and strip mining operation.

The invasion failed, with the mercenaries sustaining heavy casualties before they were evacuated off world. As a result, PPV22 remains solidly under control of its fierce tribes.

Bernham: Post Apoc Tribal World
Settings: Slide temperature one toward cold, increase precipitation. Slide population one to the left.
MODS: Faction Control (Hostile Tribe only, though you could add other factions if you want. Probably the closer you are timeline wise to the cataclysm, the more advanced factions you'd see), Regrowth, Biomes of the Rim, Wasteland.
Scenario Settings: Disable Event: Orbital trade ship arrives

Description: An ancient glitterworld civilization once resided here before it was destroyed by an unknown cataclysm hundreds of years ago. Now, this world is dominated by savage tribes. It is rumored however, that a few survivors managed to escape into crytosleep vaults, only to awaken many years later to find their former homeworld in ruins.

Royalty Version: Add MOD Simple Industrial Factions:

-Eventually, the remnants of the old civilization emerged from massive underground vaults and began to vie for dominance with the savage tribes. Around that same time, a splinter fleet of the Fallen Empire arrived on the planet, and now also seek dominance.

Triumph (Somewhat Peaceful Rimworld): For Full Information, See Post: Colony Log of the Everglades Settlement

B18741 (Contested Rimworld)
Settings: Default
MODS: Faction Control: No tribal factions, Royalty.
Scenario ideas: Brigands, Insurgents,

Description:

The recently arrived Empire appears to be in the early stages of colonizing this rimworld.
The Imperial army decimated the tribal factions, enslaved the survivors, and established small bases and settlements throughout the planet.

However, the Empire has met stiff resistance from violent outlander and pirate factions. It is unknown if their resistance will force the Empire to abandon their plans for full scale colonization or not.

General Discussion / The Problem With Royalty

Every time I start a new play through, I'm faced with a challenge. Royalty or not Royalty? With Royalty the game play is much better. But the main problem I have is the thematic feel of the Empire Faction and how it fits into the story I'm trying to tell.

The main thing I struggle with is, the Empire seems incredibly powerful. Advanced weapons, armor, and a fleet in orbit around the planet. Why are they not completely dominating the planet? The obvious answer would be that another faction is powerful enough to challenge them, but the other factions, thematically speaking, just don't seem up to the task.

Now the most enjoyable Royalty game I played was with faction control. Empire and mechanoids as the only faction with plenty of MODS to supe up the Mechanoids. Now that was a fun game because thematically, it felt like the Empire was locked in a war that they could very well lose. But the mechanoids don't even have bases so it still felt a little incomplete.

So most of my games are still with regular 1.2.

I guess my point is that since the Empire is an Epic kind of faction, they need an Epic enemy to fight for control of the planet. Any modded factions out there up to the task?

Rimworld Triumph: Nation: Supremacy of Noln. Subject <Interview 55621>

The video feed shows a disheveled middle aged man with a peg leg for his left leg. The man has a full beard and is wearing an orange prison jum suit. He appears to be sitting down in a dimly lit concrete room. His interrogator can not be seen in the video.

Q. Interrogator (Int): Let's go over this again. From the top. Your name.

A. Why are we doing this again? I swear we're not a threat to you people.

Q. It takes as long as it takes. Now once again. Your name.

A. <Sigh> It's Vector.

Q. Where were you born?

A. An urbworld, it's called Hetin. I don't know where it is relative to this place.

Q. What was your occupation?

A. Before I got laid off, I worked on an assembly line

Q. How did you come to Triumph?

A. When I got laid off, the Megacorporation enrolled me in the new colony lottery thing. I won a spot and got to join a  group of colonists heading for an animal world in a different system.

Q. So you went to an animal world?
A. Yes, it didn't have a name. The AI persona had a long number in its database for the planet and the star, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. I just know it was supposed to be an animal world.

Q. So it wasn't an animal world then?
A. Well it is. But <sigh> I really don't want to go through this again.

Q. What happened when you reached the animal world?
A. Ummm, things didn't go completely right. The AI persona discharged the crews' escape pods while in orbit and then landed at an undesignated landing site far away from where the escape pods landed. Most of the supplies landed with us though, so it could have been worse.

Q. What happened after that?
A. <Sounding annoyed> What do you mean, what happened? We built a colony there. It was hot as hell, but the soil was good for growing, and we grew more than enough. We could never find enough steel though.

Q. I understand you had a wife on this colony?
A. Yeah, her name was Mila.

Q. Where is Mila right now?
A. Probably long dead considering I'm in another star system. She divorced me, then got pregnant with some other guy. They were part of the group that stayed behind.

<Pause> <Sic>

Q. Vector, you are getting ahead of yourself again.
A. Right, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Look, can I get a glass of water. I need a break.

<Transmission Cuts out> <Cuts in 10 minutes later>

Q. Vector we need to talk about what you are really doing here on Triumph.
A. What do you mean, really doing?

Q. In our last discussion, you claimed that your colony was repeatedly attacked by large groups of intelligent insectoidss, and that these attacks eventually forced you, and four other people to leave the planet. You claim that the insects burrowed through open ground and swarmed your settlement in waves until you could forcibly bury the tunnels. You talk about types of insectoids that we've never heard of, these Megapedes, Gigalocusts and such. And then there's this insectoid queen with psychic powers that appeared to you in your nightmares, even though you never saw it in person. <Sigh> I'm sorry Vector, but I just dont find that to be credible.

A. You're wrong about one part. The attacks didn't force anyone to leave. We held our own. I just didn't want to live with my ex anymore. The others had their reasons as well. Everyone had to make their own choice at the end.

Q. Are you going to make a choice to tell me the truth Vector?

A. <Sounding frustrated> What do you want me to say to get out of here? That I made it all up, like it's crazy stuff? Just ask the others that you found with me. They'll tell you the same story.

Q. Vector, I need you to be honest with me. Are there any more interstellar ships bound for Triumph?
A. No ... well not that I know of.

Q. Are you part of a military, pirate, vigilante or paramilitary organization?
A. No

Q. Who do you currently work for?
A. No one, I'm just a refugee!

Q. How did you lose your left leg?
A. Shrapnel from a grenade. While we were trying to fend off a group of megaspiders.

Q. Was the megaspider found in the mountains?
A. No, the colony was on flat terrain. It was just a groyup of them that attacked one time.

Q. That's impossible. Listen to yourself. All the known worlds were developed using the same terraforming techniques. Insectoids were just part of biosphere development. Megaspiders live in mountains and deep underground. They don't just roam around on the surface. Everyone knows that. Basic insterstellar biology.

A. Fine, you want to know the truth. I'll tell you the truth. I hated my ex, so me and a few other disgruntled colonists stole the ship after it landed. The insectoid stuff is nonsense.

Q. Vector, I finally feel like we are getting somewhere. Let's talk more tomorrow morning.

Stories / Colony Log of the Everglades Settlement
September 06, 2020, 04:44:03 PM
Custom Scenario: Midworld Suburbs (Removed mandatory sickly trait). (If I do this play through again I'd recommend making at least 50% of characters incapable of violence). MODS of consequence: Vanilla Events Expanded , Communicable Diseases, Children and Pregnancy.

Excerpts from Our History: The Rimworld of Triumph, Textbook for Children, 3rd Edition

The treaty of Westphaxia marked the end of the period of great chaos. The treaty consolidated the planet's factions into two nations, the Confederacy of Gao and the Supremacy of Noln. The indigenous tribes were granted semi- autonomous status within each of the two new nations.

The Confederacy of Gao embraced a decentralized libertarian capitalist philosophy of governance. Slavery, recreational narcotics and, other traditional vices remained legal, though the government attempted to regulate these practices. Corruption was also exceptionally high in the confederacy and the payment of bribes to obtain government services was common practice. The government was widely viewed as weak and ineffective in all areas of life.

The Supremacy of Noln embraced a centralized socialist model of governance under the rule of a single revolutionary political party. The persecution of political dissidents and force-able removal of indigenous peoples from their native lands was common place.

The treaty of Westphaxia mandated the following:
Each nation was prohibited from exceeding industrial level technology. Specific prohibited technologies included the following: Atomic weapons, ballistic missiles, manned spaceflight, artificial intelligence, robotics, ultra-tech biological enhancements, and other areas of human knowledge long forgotten on Triumph.

Interplanetary Trade:  The treaty however  did allow for trade with the neighboring advanced midworld of Excelladus.  As Excelladus exists in the same stellar system as Triumph, they would be allowed to send their interplanetary transports and shuttles to trade with the nations. However, immigration and technological transfers were expressly prohibited. Footnote: As Excelladus was only a moderately advanced midworld, they lacked the technological capability to mount a full interplanetary invasion of Triumph.

The Pirate Threat:

Within five years of the signing of the treaty, the two nations were able to greatly reduce the pirate threat within their borders.  Settlements no longer came under regular attack from pirate raids. However, criminal activity continued in both nations as pirates continued to ambush travelers and small caravans along the roadways. It would be many more years before the roads were made completely safe for travelers.

[That establishes the setting, next will be the log of the colony]

Ideas / Event: Caravan Turned Traitor
September 04, 2020, 08:27:33 PM
Take the wanderer turned traitor event from Vanilla Events Expanded and apply it to a caravan.

A friendly caravan approaches. They pass your defenses and enter your base...then they all turn into enemies and attack.

Now could you imagine combining this with a regular raid event at the same time?

Stories / Rimworld Roleplay (All Welcome)
September 01, 2020, 09:07:57 PM
Let's roleplay with our favorite rim world characters! This could be some fun collective story telling. Try to stick to vanilla themes. I.E. No warhammer 40K/starwars/ anything else. This is rimworld RP.

Rules: No violence. (For now)

The setting: It was a rimworld but no one could agree on its name. The tribals had one name for it, the outlanders called it something else. The more recently arrived Empire also had their own name for it. Each faction claimed the world for its own, but no one could control it. The Empire had the strongest army by far, and a powerful fleet in orbit. But their numbers were far smaller than the other factions and their people were weary of war. And so, the Empire had settled into a grinding low intensity conflict with its neighbors, interspersed with temporary ceasefires much as all the other factions had with each other so long ago.

But there were some neutral places where any man or woman from any faction could spend a night in peace, buy a drink at a bar, and trade.

Bartertown was one of those places. It was a wooden walled community in a temperate forest with a moderate temperature, (30 day growing period) and it was run by a minor splinter outlander faction and ruled by a fierce warrior of a woman, believed to have been a former tribal.

Anyone could come to barter or trade in an open aired market, buy a drink at the bar, shoot some pool, hire a prostitute, or watch some nonsense on a black and white tube television.

It was fall in Bartertown and business was busy. Everyone was coming to make their last trades before the harsh winter set in

Artur arrived on his donkey at nightfall. He was a tall broad shouldered man with a bald head. He wore a leather parka, leather pants, and a cloth tuque over his head and carried an assault rifle with him. When he arrived at Bartertown, he checked his assault rifle in with the gate guard who gave him a quick pat down just to make sure he wasn't sneaking anything in. That was the rules, of the town, no weapons.

Once he had checked in he stabled his donkey and made his way to the bar. He was looking forward to drinking heartily this evening before turning himself in at the guest room.

Stories / What's a Midworld Anyway? (Story)
August 23, 2020, 10:13:28 PM
[This is from my custom scenario, Midworld Suburbs, I never thought a game without raids could be so much fun, but I'm enjoying it. Vabilla Factions Events was a Must for this one)

Adams, Skye, Carroll and Gorn were visiting Carrol's house, sitting around a small wooden table and eating some simple meals that Adams had cooked up for them. Carroll was sipping from a beer thoughtfully.

Carroll: I'd say, it's been about, what, five years now since all the factions agreed to sign those treaties? That's five years without having to worry about one raid. I'd say that's some real progress.

Skye nodded: I just hope the peace will last. I know life is still really hard for most people, but with lasting peace, we'll be able to build a strong nation, may even have a united world government. Say, does this mean we're a Midworld now?

Gorn scoffed: According to the Ordo Historica, Midworld societies have mastered flight. We're still using donkeys and horses to get around. No this is decidedly a rimworld. Albeit a slightly more peaceful one. Like you said, it's not like we don't have problems. The national government is weak and corrupt. They only come around here to collect taxes. We're pretty much on our own.

Skye: Official historical nonsense. There's no raids, I say we're a midworld.

Adams nodded: I know how we'll settle it. If something terribly awful happens to our settlement within the next two seasons or so, we'll say it's a rimworld.

Skye grinned: Here's to being an optimist then!

Scenarios / Midworld Suburbs
August 19, 2020, 05:05:31 PM
Available On Steam Workshop.

Recommended MODS:
Vanilla Events Expanded,
Communicable Diseases
Prison Labor

Commentary

This is probably one of the strangest Rimworld Scenarios I've come up with. There are no raids, so you can pretty much go full on Sim City with this play through. But it can still be challenging. Here are some of the challenges.

Crime The wanderer joined traitor event from Vanilla Events Expanded can be used to simulate crime.  Does your community need to regulate guns? What will you do with offenders? Rehabilitate them or punish them?

Disease The sickly trait will make diseases more prevalent, but you can crank up  disease frequency even more with the new custom storyteller mode in 1.2. Mods like communicable diseases and diseases overhauled can also add more challenges.

Weather I'm a big fan of the drought event from Vanilla Events Expanded, since it can devastate crops, but you don't have to cut everything up like with blight. You can tweak this event to occur more frequently.

The Next Thing I need For This Scenario to Be Even More Amazing

A decent vehicle MOD for 1.2

Other Thoughts:

I'm tempted to disable manhunter packs for my next attempt as I'm enjoying keeping my pawns mostly unarmed. But I'll leave that up to you.

Story:

Your homeworld recently ascended from rimworld to midworld. Peace reigns, mostly. But crime, disease and poverty are still rampant and the national government is largely ineffective and corrupt. You are now moving to a newly planned suburban community, Can you survive?

Your faction will be a New Arrivals.
Start with 3 people, chosen from 8.
All characters have a 100% chance to start with trait: Sickly

Incident(s) disabled:
-Enemy raid

Start with:
-Silver x800
-Packaged survival meal x100
-Medicine x20
-Component x30
-Random pet x1
-Wood x7000

Map is scattered with:
-Steel x720

General Discussion / 1.2 Bug: Refugee Quest
August 18, 2020, 06:18:50 AM
My band of brigands likes to capture prisoners, strip them of their possessions and release them. (They are honorable thieves afterall).

However, when I do this to refugees, they automatically join my colony forever. While I appreciate being able to rapidly get tons of pawns recruited, it seems like a bug!
