Ideas / Re: Multiplayer
September 25, 2013, 06:16:07 PM
I was thinking about an asymmetrical multiplayer mode where one player is controlling colonists, and the other one would control events and raiders like a game master, but as I was typing it started to be less and less good an idea.  :-[

Ugh. I would love to get into dwarf fortress but it's just so difficult to jump into, are there any games like df but are easy to jump into?

You can try Towns, it's a mashup between what I understand of Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. Isometric view, many underground levels filled with dungeons and monsters, building is done cube by cube.

Along with RimWorld, we're two for two with subtle sexual connotations in our product and company titles! I think maybe I'll make this a theme. I did want to make a hacking game called Meatspace some day....

Breaking news: Along with hosting colonists and prisoners, beds will have an extra special option to further ease colonists' mood.

General Discussion / Re: Game price?

A developer voicing publicly being fine with piracy of its own game does not happen to most games. Most devs don't tell anything about it, some get angry at it, and a few make fun of it, like the devs of Game Dev Tycoon did.

It surely helped spreading the word, as it wasn't a "bad" thing to get the game for free. As you didn't feel like a thief or a pirate, it became natural for most people to buy it after a while. The game has many other qualities as well that made it that famous, but the "fine with piracy" aspect is often overlooked.

Lately, I've been playing to Dota 2, trying all different heroes against bots. The AI is much developed in Dota 2 than in LoL, that's why I didn't quite like it as much as Dota.

I may have to repeat myself, but before actually buying the game in alpha or beta, a lot of people got it for free, either from Minecraft.net directly, with all single player features, or a cracked version allowing multiplayer on cracked servers. And that was totally fine.

The wiki is already fully versioned, and a list of edits is available. With 2 people with the rollback power for 6 pages, I think we'll manage. Good suggestion when the front page will be in its final form. Right now it's still a Work In Progress.

I suggest MailChimp too, very easy to get by when sending newsletters for the first time, basic stats of opened/clicked, should suffice at that point :)

Thanks for the edits, British, and as per your request, I made you administrator on the wiki. I answered you on the talk page and I made the necessary edits to maximize readability.

I think you overlooked something about Minecraft alpha success: Notch didn't care about piracy back then, which made the game very well-known, both because it was free to try and because the guy that made it was fine with that. If it wasn't for that try period that the creator didn't intend to make available but didn't mind it existed, I wouldn't have bought it at all.

Progress has been made, the Power page is now on.

British, thanks for the help with the template, it's a big improvement over what I did. About the images, they need to be PNGs since they are small pixellated images. JPG compression destroys the quality of that kind of image. I used the available pictures in my pages, but ideally they should be remade in PNG from screenshots from the game itself.

The pictures I posted on this board are low quality because of the low file upload size limit, but I will be able to provide better screenshots of a selection of buildings if requested.

General Discussion / Re: Quick update

It seems like they are planning an alpha test in Winter 2013, and their wiki is quite large already. Their forums are nearly empty, and the last post is from March 2013. So there is something, but I don't feel it will be a problem either.
