Can you nickname any colonist?

You can, during colonist creation just go up to their name, click on the boxes and change them to what you want.

You can change the nick by editing the save file.

yyyouuu heartless overlord you! *shakes fist* you need to give your minions proper names like 'Minnie' 'Minerva' 'Snippy' 'Snoopy' 'Snooker' & 'Pulley' so they
won't realize they're actually named after the weapon they're carrying and
'Minigun 2' won't start feeling inferior to 'Minigun 1' cause she/he is the number one

B M 1 or B_M_1 for Builder, Minigun, 1

Or heck Con the Mini
