Rather than necro an old thread...

What are people's thoughts on Leaders?

I usually find my founding colonists later living a life of luxury amongst a large colonial stronghold, yet never get the opportunity for them a title or role where they can impact / coordinate the affairs of the colony.

My Thoughts:

Each colonist can have a Leadership Trait, which can grow over time in 'office', and has benefits depending on what type of leader they are.

Furthermore, if a leader dies there is a significant drop in overall moral within the colony.

Military Leaders (Generals, etc) is self explanatory. Possibly allow boosts in combat in the vicinity of the Military Leader, and can operate out of a Military Control room for that cool affect.

As for the Administrative Body (President, Senator, Politician, etc) each have the ability to boost moral we with the colony, hold meetings in a conference room, or can enact edicts for factional trades or affairs around the colony.

Thoughts?

I think the current colonist AI will need to be vamped first before any sort of leadership is viable. For now, we're almighty Gods to them, as we (mostly) tell them all what they need to do.

Until the colonists are smart enough to tend to their own needs without much interference from us, no leaders of any kind is necessary or even relevant.
I like how this game can result in quotes that would be quite unnerving when said in public, out of context. - Myself

The dubious quotes list is now public. See it here

Well I think Tiolas' point is sort of that we would still be commanding and managing our people, but they would have other traits/benefits/behavior.

For example, in addition to what Tiolas listed, perhaps a unique behavior that the administrative leader (President or w/e you name the rank [which means it should be nameable]) might have is that when gunfire heads their way, they instinctively run away. Maybe certain fighters have specific loyalty traits that will try to stop in front of incoming fire as part of it. Course this is only expanding on what Tiolas said and is probably long term anyway. It never hurts to talk long term though.

i consider the colonist with the highest Social skill as leader. Because he is the guy who talks to traders/prisoners/other factions.

edit: in my games it is usually the farm oaf;D

Ditto. I'm quite happy with roleplaying the leadership position at the moment, but a leadership system the way the op suggests would be nice. It would add quite a bit more depth to the game.

I love the mindset of gamers. Given a new feature to help keep our people alive and make the game more realistic, the first thing we think of is a way to kill people with it

Time to make crazed, homocidal kings, ala Dwarf Fortress

Though ?

I don't think we need a whole gameplay around Leadership, however I suggest two things :
- Being able to write a colonist "role" (just like NPC are chief, archer or brawler)
- The Tales system could then keep track of that.

I think I would fit our wish to roleplay anything without obligation.
"Sam Starfall joined your colony"
"Sam Starfall left your colony with all your valuable"
