Why do builders wall themselves in?

I have been trying to close off an area for the last 10 minutes or so, but every time someone builds a wall chunk, they always do it on the inside of what I'm trying to wall off.

I even attempted to use zoning, but my guys left the zoned area to build the wall on the opposite side to where I want them to be.

Does anyone know if pawns have a build direction preference? Or are mine just being especially dumb today?

;D

u know u can wall off all but 1 piece of wall and then build it seperately. AFAIK they build from the direction they are closest to after puttig the materials down but when building multiple wall sections they can cross over on to the inside if the path is smaller. Also, why no doors?

It's really irritating, I had it happen when I was trying to build an exterior vent, so they kept locking themselves outside in a tiny 1x1 square. had to set the place to a no-go zone just to get it built!

It's the sort of thing that happens all the time. Just in my last playthrough, I had one guy go mine out a bedroom only for a cooler to be installed behind him, so he ended up close to starving before he mined a doorway and escaped.

Then another pawn went to build a short wall to stop an incoming raid from flanking me - and ended up outside the wall when it was finished! Fortunately no enemies came that way, but it makes for a less interesting story :P

I've had this happen so often. And its not that its multiple wall segments. Its a single piece of the wall that needs to be built, but they keep going to the other side, which is traveling farther, and locking themselves in.

try moving a rock chunk into the square before building the wall.  not sure if they would move it first or just stand where you want to build it.

No door because it's an area I don't want to use or go in, such as dangerous areas.

Good idea Jimmy, I'll test that out

I've also been having the issue a lot more this alpha, especially them boxing themselves in the he corner of rooms when I'm building wooden bedrooms or whatever materials I like

Directly control the colonist thats what I do. Wait until the last piece is to be build and when the guy brings the supply, draft him when he gets to the square that you want him to build from (he should drop the required materials at his feet - you can also just move some here), stand him in front of the piece you want build from the side you want built (with the supplies under him), pause, undraft, tell him to construct. He should just do it.

Agreed that this is too much fucking around. But its gets it done atm.
