If I am storing something is it sufficient to have it on tile or covered by a roof to stop it from deteriorating?

Or do I have to build walls and enclose it as officially 'indoors'?

For example, wood or items.

As long as the item is covered by a roof, it wont decay, except food of course. Most raw resources dont need to be covered either, I think hops and wood are the exception in that category.

Only rotting items (meals, food, corpses [...]) will go bad in a roof, even without walls, and I think they will not "deteriorate", they will vanish (meals) and be spoiled (corpses).

When you click on an item you'll see that if it has a decay bar.

Leather is an interesting item that doesn't decay.

Do floor tiles make a difference??

No the floor doesnt matter, you could dump your stuff in a swamp and it wouldnt decay as long as it is roofed. Good floor tiles are still recommended though, so your colonists can move fast ;D

Deteriorating is anything that isn't under a roof, don't even need a room. When you start a game,  set a 11x11 stockpile ,build at the edge a 1x1 wallpilar, and mark the area to build a roof. And all items under don't deteriorate anymore.

Rotting is a different thing, you need a temp. below +1 degree celsius that meals, vegetables and meat stop to rot.
