Unhappy Gear

Stupid colonists choose to pick up some crappy gear (50% or less), then complain about tattered gear.  So then I force them to drop it.  if they're at "home", then I have the crappy item sitting there with the red x.  But that then makes the home look bad which also makes them unhappy.  How can I indicate that some item should be picked up and stored but *not* worn?

O Negative

There's an outfit manager in the game that allows you to set the quality and HP percent min/max which can be worn. As soon as the HP drops below whatever percent you set the min to (50% is good, I think), they'll drop what they're wearing right in front of everyone around them, and go get better clothes if available :)

O Negative has it right on. The Outfit Manager can be found in the 'Assign' tab. Be careful with this though, if you do not have an adequate source of clothing your colonists will drop their tattered clothes and walk around naked. Which in some cases is worse that the otherwise mood debuff.
The only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down.

1. You should burn or recycle (need a mod) crappy appareals. Just create a stockpile with the settings next to the furneal/workbench. And another stockpile inside you main area for the good stuff.

2. Don't forget to craft new stuff for 100% values or use the mending mod to repair.

Pawns normaly switch to "better" stuff by their own, but better for them not allways be the better for you. At example they wear a crappy parka that keep warm then a beautiful duster at 100%.

I never saw the appeal of burning clothing as it is all worth silver. Especially synthetic materials and devilstrand gear. Outfit manager works flawlessly when it comes to not wearing "unhappy gear".

Thanks everyone.  The outfit manager does exactly what I need.  And I agree about not burning the crap - I keep it around and sell it.

Some stuff isn't worth all that much though. At the beginning, yeah sell it all. But at some point you will want to start burning bad gear instead of keeping it. Just to save space.

I create crematorium bills to burn clothes from 0-24% hp and awful-shoddy quality (works reasonably for me mid-game).  As @Serenity says, the storage space is more valuable to me than the small eventual trading revenue I could get from those items.

I also have clothing restrictions for my colonists with higher cut-off points, that leaves me with the stuff in the middle to sell.

Those keen enough could optimize by creating bills with different cut-off points for different materials.

Good point Serenity.  I've been hoping for a trade caravan soon so I could clear up space.

Is there any way to set up the tailoring bench to ignore clothes below a certain damage level when it counts how many you have?  Traders have become so rare that I end up having to manually keep track of how many new sets of clothes I have to make sure I have any at all to wear.
