I learned of it through Scott Manley. Astronomer, Dj and Kerbal extraordinaire on Youtube ;)

Still saw Miss_Jamball playing it. Anything she plays is worth investigating. Unless she's ranting about what a horrible, awful, blot on humanity it is.

If she's screaming at the game though she probably loves it.

I saw a video about the game from Scott Manley, during the KickStarter.

As I said in the first thread, and this poll verifies it, it's crazy how many people watch other people play video games on youtube. I would much rather play a game as opposed to some guy talking about it as he plays it and watch that lol. I always laugh when I see my son doing it, and I guess I am old or not in the right generation for it as it bores the heck out of me after watching a few minutes(only 29 though lol). To each his own I suppose, as I just youtube to learn things in games/in real life such as tutorial videos on occasion.

I like to watch other people play almost as I like playing most games. :D

I agree. I only view such things when I'm looking for gameplay footage when I'm interested in buying a game.

It's a little different if it's a friend though, in small doses I can do that. However my girlfriend enjoys watching me play games (sometimes she requests it interestingly enough) that have story and voice acting, something with a story to follow. Like GTAV, Red Dead Redemption, and Destiny back when I played those. She's a moderate gamer herself so that's probably part of it. But she doesn't watch Youtubers do it.

Yet people watch sports on TV and have no desire to go play it themselves.
The former is entertainment, the latter is recreation. Playing a game is recreation, but sometimes we just want to be entertained. Not every game will entertain every person - they have to like the game, kind of know what's going on, and have a decent host/player. There's Youtube of course, but Twitch adds a whole new level by allowing direct and immediate interaction with the streamer, often a richer experience than you'd get playing by yourself.

So do I.

As for how I found out about Rimworld:
Yes: Youtube :D
By Blitzkriegsler and Yeti and I also tend to like this sort of games (sandbox/rouge-like).

Darmok

Found out about it on a thread on 4chan about DF-like games. It looked like the most promising game in the thread, so here I am.

I got interested after watching a video from one of my favorite Youtubers. It was completely off from what he'd normally post, so I decided to give it a try. Not only was the narration amazing, but the story the video told had left me in both a state of amazement and curiosity. Any time I want to introduce a friend to RimWorld (Going on 4 friends now who I've gotten hooked on RimWorld), I simply link them this video.

I like to google for things like "space colony building games" and this Rimworld thing kept popping up there so I gave it a go and never looked back.

Definitely Youtube. It's funny, I originally went on to Youtube to figure out how to play Prison Architect. This was probably a year ago, maybe longer. I found a channel called Stuff+ on Youtube and he's British and specializes in PA. As I was wandering his other Let's Play I saw RimWorld, checked it out (alpha 5, I believe) and it was okay. Earlier this year he did a return to the series with Alpha 9 and I really got into it. Grabbed the game and been a fan since.

As for watching other people play games on Youtube, I do it to learn other strategies. I also do it for entertainment. On my lunch break I can't really play RimWorld so Youtube scratches that itch. It's also great background sound if I'm busy doing something else. It also helps if the Youtuber is entertaining.

FMJ Penguin

Some other fairly pop youtubers to watch for those that are interested. Think I originally learned about it from Quill18. Don't worry, nether of them invest all their time into SUB mining their audience(pet peeve of mine).

Tynan

Interesting. I'm surprised how many people found it just from random Internet searches.

Yeah. Although Rimworld is similar to other games which makes it easier to find through that, since searching "Games like DF, Prison Architect," and a few other games people have enjoyed will bring them here.
