Hello,all! So,thinking about my colony,I realized something.

Only one of my six Colonists is proficient with ranged weapons. Two of my Colonists have Brawler. So,obviously, this means that my colony will largely be defended by burly men and women with assorted blades, bludgeons and skewers. So,what sort of melee weapons do you equip your Colonists with? Personally,I alternate between the Gladius and the Club, because the Gladius is relatively quick, and deals respectable damage. And the Club? Well, prisoners are nice. I want my ten Colonists sooner, rather than later.

What about you all? Which implements of intimate violence do you prefer?

Boston

I like spears, although they definitely could be increased in both range and damage. It has the third-highest chance for causing bleeding.

I also use a mod that adds shields, so my characters can use melee weapons and defend themselves

High quality plasteel longswords are great for chopping up people!

However, since my melee guys get shot by large groups, I mostly use them for chasing retreating pirates or attacking smaller groups. Attacking with longswords is simple and effective but because of game mechanics, chasing people with longswords doesn't work as well because of long cooldown or...whatever, that makes your guy go right next to a retreating raider, NOT hit them, then run after them again.

For chasers I prefer high quality plasteel knives because you can score a hit every time you catch the enemy. Having a fast character (fast walker, jogger) will help a lot, too.

Too-DAMN-Much

they're not viable without a melee shield and they don't start with one by default, melee means you're food in my colonies.

TLHeart

melee can wear both plate armor and a personal shield in vanilla.

Gladius cuts people up quick. Long swords kill people quick. Clubs knock people out quick. Spears destroy organs.

Now with animals, I assign my animals to the melee people, and let the ranged weapons thin the enemies down, then send forth the herd to incapacitate as many as possible as quickly as I can, before the enemy turns and flees. I do not release the animals as I want that group all attacking the same person as the melee guy.

Plasteel maces.

I love brawlers. My long range weapon guys will hide behind cover taking pot shots to lure the baddies in, then the brawlers swarm out and bash them into submission. I get a lot of recruits that way.

Two or three brawlers per baddie. Skilled baddies with long ranged weapons or grenades first.

Check materials, check stats of weapons at workbench, chose something.

I prefer longswords because good ones will kill any human in 1-2 hits (most of the time). I even used them vs. few centipedes and they worked awesome (had to sacrifice many dogs for distraction trough).

Maces are good for capturing people and they still pretty good as combat weapon. But if the best sword is plasteel one, then the best mace is uranium one. And uranium is super hard to get.

Knives are fine. Do not have much experience wich spears/clubs/shivs.

P.S.: Do not make clubs out of stone.
Pain, agony and mechanoids.

Plasteel does nothing other than increase speed and sharp damage. Since mace doesn't have sharp damage you'd better use URANIUM MACE, increase damage by 40%, although it also reduce speed by 40%.

Plasteel masterwork longsword deals around 25 which one hit incap if it hit lag and 2 hit kill if it hit torso, so it's hand down best weapon.

If you use mod, then vancidium battleaxe is best weapon. It has 25 base damage and my masterwork steel axe already deal around 38

Good luck against mechanoids!!!

Why no love for spear ?  Not so good to sell, but costs fewer resources to make. When you reach high quality and plasteel, a spear deals almost as much as a sword.

I actually have a plan for mechanoids, especially considering that I've unintentionally set up my colony within spitting distance of a mechanoid-infested casket vault. I have a few mods that enable it; Make an artificial bog around my point of entry, surround it with plasteel embrasures, equip all of my shooty colonists with miniguns, the rest man minigun turrets. Shoot down a wall segment, and PRAY TO PHOEBE CHILLAX that everything doesn't go pear-shaped.

EDIT: Also, utterly unrelated, but what is it that Phoebe is holding in the Storyteller menu? Because, whatever it is,I want one.

I'm not sure how to crop.

Good luck with your inferiority!

I'ts my understanding that blunt weapons increase the chance of taking baddies alive. So faster mace = better mace.

I may experiment with your other suggestions, though.

Thanks.

Mihsan, can you explain why you shouldn't make clubs out of stone please?

Limestone   0.6   1.00   0.60

It reduce attack speed by 40% and sharp damage by 40%, while doesn't increase any damage. Generally you shouldn't craft any weapon out of stone.

Which is weird, because this

http://www.warpaths2peacepipes.com/native-indian-weapons-tools/ball-clubs.htm

says that a stone-weighted club is a perfectly serviceable weapon. Just like a stone-headed spear or arrow will kill you just as dead as a steel-tipped one, really.
