Why don't pawn combine stacks?

That's my biggest irk with this game. They simply don't combine stacks. I've storage filled with one stacks worth of something taking up five or more spaces. :(

Pretty please make it so they are smarter about stacking?

Yes! This should just be part of the hauling job. If there is nothing to haul, then defragment my storage area!

They do it a bit already, if they haul something they take it to the partial stack first.  Yet if you have several pawns are hauling the same thing only the first one will take it too the partial stack while the rest drop in a free space.  So you still get a few partials left over.

A special hauling job after the fact might be handy, say a 'condense' command for the zone to make pawns minimize the stacks as best as they can.

^ They sometimes do it a bit, but there's no consistency to it.

On second thought, it is a literal pile of stuff on the floor.  Maybe what we need is a new piece of furniture: Storage Shelf.  I'm thinking it would be a Stuffified piece of furniture that functions exactly like a stockpile zone, except colonists try to maintain stockpile defragmentation, and occasionally defragment it like MisterVertigo said.

I believe this has to do with the degradation of the item maybe?

Good call, des.  That's probably a factor.  But it still happens to things that can't degrade.  *shrug*
