I've been playing quite  a bit lately... about 300 hours so far. Huge learning curve obviously, but suddenly I started to get very good at the game. Well... its because I abuse mountain building and choke points.

Really this game is intense, and the loss of intensity has to do with mountain building and your ability to abuse it. Also some mods can detract or add, but the original product is actually pretty good... and gut wrenching.

Mountain building should probably be met with a greatly reduced growing area, which would make sense among the shale and granite your going to run into. Most farms are not on mountains for a reason, and it would be logical to balance mountain maps with sparse growing zones, and much less the closer you get to the actual mountain. Would probably fix the issue, meaning you have to survive to hydroponics and power them sufficiently to build within a choke point. Otherwise, you have to venture out of your safe haven to gather food, which would be exposed.

Seems like a pretty solid fix to me.

In gameplay terms I agree that this would make sense and be a good change.

IRL, I don't think food for 5 people would be such a big problem unless it's truly hard earth nearly devoid of life and water

But yeah  +1

We need a random cave-in event.

But yeah I just lure them into my city, and bam. A minigun, a charge rifle, a grenade launcher (rimsenal), and a spike rifle (rimsenal) are tearing them limb from limb and they can't do anything about it. I don't need a killboxes because my base IS a killbox.

Shemstonian engineering at its finest.

Of all the suggestions to deal with mountain bases, I like this one.  Far out growing zones away from the mountain area.  You can see my A12 Mountain Fort in the Link of my Sig.  Eventually you dont need to leave the mountain except for certain things you cant have in hydroponics.  If I had to go farther out for those things then it would have been a nice optional challenge.

Isn't infestation enough for you you still want a cave in event

Why not just adopt it in vanilla game, the Caveworld flora mod heck you have to plant those in hills, mountains or inside your dark dingy base with no lamps of course if lamp is present won't grow or slow growth and if you have the growing as your food and medicine. Now your lamp is plant pot + brightbells.

Edit: here's my best mountain base pic look what's growing inside my mountain Gleamcap medicine and some wild caveworld flora. this is a challange by the way if you don't have the luxury of the front like in my base cause you have to mine out a room for those caveworldflora food and meds 30x30 to be exact to fit all your base needs and you can use hydroponics for your hay and hops

Create a long dark corridor at some unused area in your base. Put lamps everywhere so the light is never 0% dark. Bugs will always spawn at the dark corridor. Put turrets n' shit there.

Nice idea.

An idea that comes to my mind to test and balance this is, mountains always have approximately 2 square wide area around them. To check the viability, it could be changed to 10, 15, 20, etc, to see how it "looks".

Never thought about that.  Interesting.  I have yet to get them in my current base.  But I dont think that building in a mountain should be entirely discouraged.  Maybe just allow for more or different benefits to being in the open.

Alternative for COLD biome:  create a dark room with heater.  When infestation spawns there, cut the power.

would the heater make too much light?  if not then brilliant!

I don't think they produce enough light to affect the spawn chances, but if in doubt you could put it in small adjacent room with a vent.

(And btw I can't take original credit for the idea, I don't remember who I saw doing that.)
