Syvera

Hello, everyone! I'm Sylvera. I skipped over the "L" key somehow on my horrible laptop keyboard, so I guess i'm now "Syvera", which I suppose isn't a huge deal. Haha.

I'm a 25 year old gamer, writer, and occasional freelance programmer. I've spent the better part of 12 years writing my own Science Fiction stories, though i've never had anything published. The storyline potential of Rimworld excites me, and I am certainly looking forward to seeing how it develops in the future; not that i'm implying it isn't already amazing!

I grew up playing Real Time Strategy and Roleplaying games, like Command & Conquer, Moon Project, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle 64, etc. I'm also a Brony, Doctor Who fan and fan of Warhammer 40K.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?

> I was looking up random "Let's Play" videos on Youtube and found a Let's Play of Rimworld. After watching it for a few episodes I decided this was definitely a game I had to have. The raw potential is staggering! I could certainly see it becoming even more popular than Minecraft in the future. No, really; it's epic!

-What's your favorite other game?

> Honestly, it's near impossible for me to pick an absolute favorite. However, the top 5 would have to be:

1: Dofus - An amazing Turn-Based MMORPG I used to play.
2: Asheron's Call - A very old MMORPG, which I still play to this day. My favorite of the Genre.
3: Disgaea - A great Strategy RPG that i've spent hundreds of hours playing. Very addictive!
4: Minecraft (Modded) - Always so much to do!
5: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Of all the C&C Games, I played this one the most. :>

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?

> Any time I got drunk and did anything on Second Life. No, really. I always make an ass of myself. Worst part is, I usually don't remember any of it!  :-X

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?

> S'mores Cereal. The best ever, hands down.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?

I backed a game on kickstarter, and when their forum heard I liked Prison Architect, they recommended Rimworld. I'm just trying to figure out a couple of things about the game before I buy it.

What'cha need to know?

Whilst I understand that 'how hard it is' is subjective, I'm trying to get a feel for how hard it is because I don't want to give out this much money for a game that will prove too challenging--I've got a steam library full of games that I paid one to three dollars for on sale, and a lot of them got deinstalled because I couldn't work out how to play them, even after watching YT videos (and YT vids are guilty of making things look easy). Had I realised how HARD Portal 1 and 2's end bosses would be for me, I wouldn't have bought them, for example.

Actually, you choose the difficulty as part of starting a game. It ranges from 10% (base builder mode) to 160% (or higher? I play mostly 60% myself).  It's quite enjoyable, and there's lots of mods toy can use, and even Dev Mode if you want more control over environment & events.

rrooster

Hi all, this is rrooster from the Finnish Lapland.

I just realized I bought Rimworld exactly one year ago to the day (though I've only played alphas 1, 3 and 8 ). So, I figured I'll introduce myself as I've recently joined the forums as well.

If I remember correctly I first learned of Rimworld via the youtuber Zemalf who ran an early look series in late 2013.

Favorite other games include Civ 4, Fallout series, Cataclysm: DDA, DF, FM series.

Probably the most embarrasing thing about me gaming is how much time I spend planning as opposed to actually advancing game time and playing the damn thing. This is especially true with trying to get the best possible starting location in Civ 4 and was partially true with Rimworld until I figured out how stone types are distributed in the world map (marble and granite for the win...). I also spend a lot of time planning my colony's layout before unpausing, this can be embarrassing if, say, the colony gets wiped out in early game...  (Exhibit A: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=8988.0).

For breakfast? Oatmeal porridge!

milon

Welcome, rrooster!  How is stone distributed on the world map?  I also love marble & granite, and the best I have right now is slate & granite.
(PS - Really enjoyed your story!)

I don't know if this is 100% correct, but to me it looks like each horizontal line on the map has a defined configuration of stone types (the top most horizontal line of the map seems to always have marble and granite, for example). So to find the desired rock types you just click down (or up) on a vertical line until you find what you're looking for and then scan the horizontal line for a good starting location. I assume there to always be at least a few "lines" on each map that only contain marble and granite, so the above method speeds up the search significantly.

And thanks again for the compliment. I'm beginning to find out that creating a narrative to a playthrough makes it that much harder to just revert back to an earlier save file when something small or big goes wrong. To make it be about the journey not the destination.

A_Soft_Machine_Man

Hey everyone, Soft_Machine_Man. I'm an American (specifically from Florida) gamer, history student, and speculative fiction enthusiast who spends far too much time on his butt.

-What introduced you to RimWorld?

I first encountered RimWorld around Alpha 3 after videos on YouTube started popping up like daisies, and I started watching them. Being a fan of Dwarf Fortress (and DF-likes in general) I decided that I'd get it once it got into a later Alpha.

-What's your favorite other game?

Man, I have too many to succinctly list. Suffice it to say my interests vary greatly.

-Most embarrassing game-related moment?

Causing a fatal driver crash on my (first generation model) PS3 by glitching out Fallout: New Vegas. Dat Bethesda quality.

What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?

Raisin Bran, because I was born eighty years old.

Another Floridian! W00t! I hope you're not a Floridian stuck in Minnesota, like I am. Originally from Citrus County, FL. Now i'm in Otter Tail, MN. It's way too cold for my warm Floridian blood. x.x

Funny thing is, I absolutely hate hot, humid weather despite having been born and raised in the panhandle. For me, 70 F0 is warm, and cold only starts around 15 F0.

amalilakab

Hello all! I hail from California, USA

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
My friend/roommate has been playing it for a long time. I recently started paying Prison Architect again and realized it was similar to RimWorld so I'd give it a try. I may or may not be addicted now. Mostly may.

-What's your favorite other game?
Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, League of Legends

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I am failing to think of anything I would consider embarrassing. I can think of disappointing gaming-related story so I'll tell one of those and I'll keep it short (which makes it a boring story). About a decade ago when I was having regular LANs in my parents garage, my parents left out of town for the weekend and let me have friends over for a LAN. We ended up having almost 40 people there. I never imagined I'd actually properly utilize the 24-port switch I had. Anyway, the entire LAN was for the original Warhammer 40k PC game. I was pretty decent, but stressed out trying to get everyone connected, getting a 16-port switch, etc. I ended up getting knocked out in the first round.

The final match was between two friends and they ended up being in a stalemate. The game was dragging on and neither team could pull an advantage. The brother of one of the players went to his opponent and told him he had a weak spot and he should send everything. Since the game had gone on for a very long time at this point he didn't give a shit and sent everything he had. He ended up losing and the story is retold from time to time and wounds are re-opened. Anyway, yeah, I don't have an embarrassing story. :p

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
I don't eat breakfast cereal. I do love making biscuits, bagels, pretzels, etc., from scratch the night before and then using them to make breakfast sandwiches.

Lastly, I would like to leave everyone with a screenshot from when I beat the game.

DFDelta

Greetings DFDelta from germany here.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
Been following the game and lurking ever since it popped up on Steam Greenlight. Finally decided to stop waiting and get a pack a few days ago.

-What's your favorite other game?
I'm jumping around a lot, mostly between various games of the MechWarrior franchise, Planetside 2, Space Station 13 and Dwarf Fortress.
Also formerly Shores of Hazeron before its solo dev shut it down. (Not that I expect anyone to know that game  ::))

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
Don't remember anything really embarrassing.
The most fitting one would be that one time I managed to die more often during a raid evening with my World of Warcraft guild then everyone else combined.
In my defense there were not many deaths to beginn with since we all knew the dungeon we were in and all my deaths were unrelated to combat.
Still, being the guy who got killed by the terrain 8 or 9 times in less then 3 hours stuck with me for quite a few years.  ;D

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
I don't care as long as it is something crunchy.
Constant optimism will not solve your problems, but it will annoy enough people to be worth the effort.

Robesidian

Hello, Im Robesidian and im a gameaholic... Lol, well, lets just say I play alot of games and love to create and write my own games but not as a career but for fun.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
Well, I scan Youtube constantly looking for new and interesting games, I love games which tell a great story or let you create your own. So Rimworld was a no brainer.

-What's your favorite other game?
Dwarf Fortress

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
Anytime I have to roleplay (in D&D as a DM) being a woman while the PC hits on her, Lonely Bastards lol

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
Umm, never been one for cereal. Like my bacon, eggs, sausgae, and toast combo with a glass of milk and OJ. Sunside up btw!

'Ello all :)  Figured I'd sign up for the forums since I've been playing RimWorld for a while.  I have to say that it's an interesting little game.

Quote from: Tynan on September 16, 2013, 11:54:27 PM-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?

I've been interested in the genre for a while.  I played Dwarf Fortress a few years back, but never really got very far in it (though I did have plenty of !!fun!!).  I've also played around with a few other games with similar elements, like Stranded, Minecraft, NetHack (which I've also never really gotten that far in), and a few other roguelikes and survival games that I don't remember because they didn't really hold my attention for very long.  I've also played a fair number of settlement-building games, such as the Tropico series, SimCity 2000, Caesar II, and Grand Ages:  Rome.

I was introduced to RimWorld by a friend on another forum I frequent, who likes these sorts of games quite a bit himself and highly recommended it to me.

Quote-What's your favorite other game?

I'm not sure I can really pick one, to be honest.  I've been a fan of games like Civilization since I was really young, as well as a few of the games I've already listed above.  Lately, I've been playing an awful lot of Crusader Kings II and Kerbal Space Program as well.

Quote-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?

Years ago, I was playing co-op multiplayer with a friend in a shooter.  I forget the exact circumstances, but the only weapons we allowed on the field were rocket launchers.  I happened to line up a shot that would bag quite a few of the opposing AI bots in the blast range... and then my friend ran out in front of me trying to line up the same shot himself just as I pulled the trigger.  Needless to say, it killed us both.

Hmm...  Let me get back to you on that...

Pain, agony and mechanoids.

Introduced me:
I'm subscribed to quill18, a Let's-Player. He's doing these videos.

It reminds me somewhat of Evil Genius, so my first base, which is also still going strong, has a very simple entrance identical to my entrace to the Evil Part of my Super Secret Evil Lair when I played through that game: It's a short hallway, a 180 turn, and another short hallway to some doors on the side. There are nine turrets and some sandbags, but I don't slowdown the entrance with sandbags.

Seed: 1337 (because), I made a base from the completely enclosed but open area with a building attached on the western side, south eastern corner of the map.

Favorite other game: Master of Magic

Breakfast Cereal: They're evil. Steel-cut-oatmeal for me.
