What do you hope that the game will be like when it is finally released? I hope for:
MASSIVE MAPS, like 1000x1000 or 2000x2000 or something like that
fleshed out colony relations where you can go to other towns and trade and use diplomacy or demonstrations of force to gain respect
LOTS of new weapons, buildings, research, and a real tech tree that looks the part too
lots of new events like sinkholes, crashed ships, diseases, etc.
lots of endgames: take over the region by killing all your enemies, make a ship and get off the planet, send out a long range transmissions and get rescued, and others
some other cool things like cloning, creating robot armies, vehicles, and sabotaging trade ships

What else?
On the right path, but the wrong medication.

I like how there's a thing that displays how long you've logged in to the forums. It shows just how many hours you've spent here, never to get back...

isn't that just a tad too far from our beds?
Linus Torvalds: "But it clearly is the only right way. The fact that everybody else does it some other way only means that they are wrong"
Robert J. Hanlon: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

That is the point. You could send out special exploration parties with lots of supplies or in vehicles to scout at the edge of the map. There would also be more things to find like artifacts, ancient tombs, or even small villages. There would of course also be a fog of war that people could see pretty far in so they wouldn't get blindsided, but that would effectively conceal most of the map so exploration parties were necessary.

I don't think he means it literally, he wants to say that we shouldn't speculate too much while the game is stil in alpha.

woah, slow down. the game is in alpha and their is no way to predict when the game will be completed. tynan before said he could expand the game infinitly as much as he wanted. he could add so much until the game is released, one step at a time.

I know, i'm getting carried away. I just thought it would be fun to contemplate what this humble game could become. It's already enjoyable for hours upon hours, and it's so early in it's development. There's so much potential for fun and creativity here. I was just trying to grasp that.
