Rationing food

Would it be a nice addition to the game to allow cooking, but with fewer resources?

Right now every meal takes 10 food to cook, but how about an option to ration supplies so that 5 food are taken for a meal. This will still make the colonist hungry, should make them tire more easily, but at least prevents starvation, and allows you to keep more colonist alive in harsh conditions.

Perhaps there already is a trait, or one could be introduced, by which a colonist steals food in case of rationing because he wants more to eat. This in turn could be a cause for conflicts, due to  negative mood effects in other colonists.

Nutrient paste dispenser uses less resources per unit, but has a mild mood hit. You can disallow all food and feed your pawns manually when they are starving if things have gone that badly, but I find it most useful at the game start when they have a significant boost to their mood.

Simple Food is 10 pieces of anything
Fine Food is 5 of crops 5 of meat
Lavish Food is 10 of crops and 10 of meat

I never ever use the paste, so I dont know the actual numbers for them.  There is a bit of variety there and they are not all 10 pieces each meal.

Only thing I think they should do is make it so you can choose what type of meals you feed your prisoners (as I mentioned in another post).  Hate when I am just barely doing Lavish or Fine foods and end up feeding them to my prisoners over Simple Food.

That's only if you upgrade the nutrient paste dispenser, and only by a small margin.

I agree that you should be able to select what kind of food to allow your prisoners, just like the kind of medicine.

My suggestion though is to add a bit more depth and option when not a lot of food is available. It's the difference between feeding two colonist a little over feeding only one.

The upgraded nutrient paste was removed. So now it's just 6 units of food per meal I think - the whole point of the nutrient paste machine is conserving food. I'm not sure why we would need the same thing but cooked on a stove.

I think a toggle on the paste dispenser that makes it the priority food would be best.  Also a toggle to forbid the hoppers from being emptied for meal cooking.

The idea is that if you are short on food you dont want people making meals and depleting your food faster.  Also if you have emergency food packs you can save them until you have no other choice.

I still say all of this is possible within the current game. If you suspend cooking and forbid meals, everyone automatically goes for the paste dispenser. Is hoppers being emptied actually a problem you've had? I find it's the other way around, colonists prioritize hoppers before any other hauling job, which causes them to waste lots of time topping them off.

manually forbidding meals is annoying and tedious.  granted I can suspend general meal production but if i have several cook tables it would be easier if there were a central control over food consumption.

my hoppers get emptied by people cooking food when there is nothing else left to cook.  not an issue really once things get settled but still a pain.

Forbidding meals is the easy part - manually feeding your pawns is the tedious part. But then again, if you have reached that point in the game, you should probably focus on never letting it happen again no matter the cost.

I have to mention I'm rather tired of my colonists getting greedy and devouring the fine/lavish/survival meals first.

I also get pissed when they start to eat raw food instead of waiting patiently for the cooks to finish cooking.  Especially since it takes 15 raw food to satisfy as much hunger as the meal made using 10 food.

Actually, it's 17 raw. 50 nutrition becomes 85.
