is this true i read the Faq thing but i dont think i understood it.

If you bought before November 4, 2014 you will definitely get a Steam Key.
If you bought after November 4, 2014 you might get a steam key, there are no promises, wait and see what happens after release.

Plummb

sigh what a waste now i have to rebuy the game when its released on steam what a disapointment i guess this is why u dont buy into early access

Jaxxa

Thats not exactly what I said. Just wait and see what happens.

Admiral Obvious

Because of a variety of legal reasons, valve decided to change their policies after November 4th, so game developers can't actually officially promise that their customers would get steam keys, before a game is actually released on Steam.

It's still incredibly likely that you'd get a Steam key.

skullywag

Just everyone relax and wait for the release date. Nothing is set in stone there are just certain things that cannot be said/promised right now due to steam policies.
Skullywag modded to death.
I'd never met an iterator I liked....until Zhentar saved me.
Why Unity5, WHY do you forsake me?

Just to make Admiral Obviouses comment even more obvious! (He would be proud. I'm aiming to get very highly ranked officer in the Obvious corps)

You can manually add Rimworld to Steam you know, you can even do it now.

Why rebuy it? Nobody forces you to go steam, the game will continued to be sold and updated separately?

Remember you can add non steam games to your steam library (I think).
Linus Torvalds: "But it clearly is the only right way. The fact that everybody else does it some other way only means that they are wrong"
Robert J. Hanlon: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Tynan has stated that the DRM-free will continue to exist.

And have none of Steam's benefits other than a shortcut. Steam integration is the strength of Steam.

The only benefit would be workshop and maybe steam cloud, but that will not be a thing at launch I've heard. I actually like the way you add mods right now, it's even quite easy to modify mods lol, so I don't really need it to release to steam. I'm more excited about A14 than steam release

Saw a post on Steam by Tynan that appears he has changed his mind on that. Steam cloud will be in right away.

edit: I'd also like to add that like you, the steam release is far secondary to A14 for me as well.

I really like the ability to have multiple installs on one computer, and not sure how well the steam version would handle that, if at all. So, I'm not even sure I'll do the Steam key at this point. Especially with Tynan not having announced whether or not we'll have access to both SendOwl and Steam if we do use the system for a Steam key. Note, I did ask him that question on Steam, and he said he was undecided at that point, which was about a month ago.
